Serving Two Masters?, by C. William Pollard

"Serving Two Masters?" provides practical insight and sound advice for anyone who has wrestled with the integration of faith and work. In 51 short essays, Bill Pollard challenges us to do far better than "balance" or "juggle" our personal, spiritual, and business imperatives. He shows us how they come together in a powerful sense of purpose. Drawn from Pollard's more than 25 years of executive experience with ServiceMaster, the reflections in "Serving Two Masters?" show us how"despite contrary belief " faith belongs in business, God and profit have a lot in common, and the bottom line shouldn't be a business's sole reason for being. In "Serving Two Masters?" the best-selling author of "The Soul of the Firm" shows that principles of faith and smart business practices are not mutually exclusive and that combining the two can actually lead to extraordinary success.

“What a wonderful book. Read it!” (Ken Blanchard, Co-author The One Minute Manager and The Secret Ken Blanchard, Co-author The One Minute Manager and The Secret)

From the Back Cover
Imagine you are a manager at a large company. You stay current with the latest thinking in business management and leadership. You are up on the trends in sales and operations. But for the wealth of resources available, you haven’t found much support in answering some of the most important questions about your business life: How can I manage the tension of living an authentic faith while delivering ever-increasing business results? Is there meaning in my work beyond making a living? How can I understand the world of money and profit in the context of my faith or a purpose and meaning for life? Who’s been there before me?

About the Author
C. William Pollard joined ServiceMaster in 1977 and has served not once but twice as its CEO. His first term as CEO was from 1983 to 1993, a period characterized by major change, including the introduction and growth of the company''s consumer group. In 1999, Bill returned as CEO and served for sixteen months until the process of electing his successor was completed. During his leadership, ServiceMaster was recognized by "Fortune" magazine as the #1 service company among the Fortune 500. ServiceMaster was also identified as a "star of the future" by the "Wall Street Journal" and recognized by the "Financial Times" as one of the most respected companies in the world. In 2004, Pollard received the Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh Award for Business Ethics at Notre Dame.

An Encouraging Message From The Corner Office - "Serving Two Master? Reflections On God And Profit" by C. William Pollard
By Alan L. Chase
What a striking and ironic juxtaposition! On the same day that MSN.com ran an article on the ten best prisons for CEO's, Harper Collins published a book by former ServiceMaster CEO, C. William Pollard. Seeing the recent pathetic performance of Enron's Kenneth Lay in the dock trying to explain away egregious acts of misfeasance and malfeasance, it is a refreshing change to hear from a CEO who wrestled with his conscience before being prodded to do so by a Grand Jury!

In this book, that consists of a compilation of short inspirational messages that Pollard delivered to the ServiceMaster Board of Directors over the course of twenty-five years, the author leads us gently through a healthy questioning over the over-arching question: "Are principles of faith and principles of smart business practice compatible?"

ServiceMaster's formal Corporate Objectives make it clear that the company's leaders believe that it is possible to integrate these two streams of principles into one organization. The ServiceMaster vision is:

To honor God in all we do

To help people develop

To pursue excellence

And to grow profitably

"We are often asked if these four objectives are compatible. Some people believe there is an inevitable conflict between spiritual values and economic objectives. Can a person, they wonder, honor God and make a profit?" (Pages 108-109)

Through the book, Pollard answers with great clarity this rhetorical question. He offers one inspiring example and case study after another to reinforce the fact that a company can successfully navigate the tricky waters of being faithful to God while at the same time keeping faith with all of the company's stake holders.

At the heart of the ServiceMaster philosophy is the principle of "Servant Leadership."

"Several months ago, while teaching a ServiceMaster case study at Harvard Business School, I was asked by one of the students, `What is the most important trait you would look for in your successor?' My answer was, `A person who had or could develop a servant's heart.'" (Page 42)

Pollard continues his explanation of the centrality of servanthood to the ServiceMaster way of life:

"The theme of our annual report this year is `Leading and Learning by Serving.' The sculpture on the cover was created by Esther Augsburger and depicts Jesus Christ washing his disciples' feet - a striking and practical example of servant leadership. This sculpture and the granite wall behind it listing those who have contributed twenty-five years or more of service to our company, will be at the entrance of our new office facility at One ServiceMaster Way. It will be a reminder that our company has been built by those who have made career commitments to serve with a mission and a purpose." (Page 45)

Skeptics might wonder if a corporate culture in which faith in Jesus Christ is part of the public persona of the CEO is a place where those who are not practicing Christians might feel oppressed or uncomfortable. Is ServiceMaster a company that beats its employees and customers over the head with the Bible? Pollard addresses these concerns as he tells about his friend and colleague, Bisher Mufti:

"Now, for me as a follower of Jesus Christ and also a leader in this firm, I must live my faith in such a way that it is not imposed upon my colleagues, but instead can be examined, understood, and in some cases, embraced by them as they seek not only to do things right, but also to do the right thing."

"One of those colleagues and friends is currently serving as vice president of our international division with primary responsibilities for our businesses in the Middle East. Bisher Mufti joined ServiceMaster twenty-eight years ago as a young immigrant from Jordan. His first job was a second-shift floor cleaner in one of the hospitals we were serving. He has grown in our business and in his essay in this year's annual report, he specifically comments on how, as a Muslim, he has been accepted and nurture in our community. He has learned that there can be a common ground in our business for people of different faiths. It begins with `the way we respect and treat others.' As he has witnessed our values working in the lives of others and in his own life, he has concluded that the ServiceMaster objectives transcend differences and cultural backgrounds." (Pages 123-124)

This book is one that I will keep on my desktop, and refer to on a regular basis as a way of reminding me to keep my priorities in their proper order. This little gem of a volume comes with my highest recommendation. Whatever your religion, reading the thoughts of this successful business leader may help to restore your faith in the ability to succeed while maintaining ethical standards. We can all profit from such a vision and approach!

I choose to work for them and I lived it with them and i was glad
By Asa Ferguson
The years I spent with them in K THUR 12 Education,Banking ,food manufacturing and two universities was truly a life of learning and was very rewarding because the did really live what the book spoke of. I was privileged to be in an Award of excellences meeting will many of the leaders in the book. I heard them speak and later as I grew in the company I received awards and even spoke at some of there district meetings. Some of the finest friends I have, I met at my job in the form of employees ,fellow labors in the service providers ,And the customers I served. I am friends with many of them to this day. I retired 7 years ago and reading this book brought back many great memories. I believe the presentation was fair and truthful. In fact I wish I could go back in time with the knowledge I have. hindsight is 20/20 I know I would be a better man and a better leader of people now that I have had time to reflect on the years of my service. I know that I would have a better understanding of what God is doing in my life and in those I am called to serve. It is easy to see the spots on leaders that excel to places of high visibility and like many others I looked at the spots instead of seeing the good in them or that they did for me and others. One of the customers I served spoke to my people on the subject of "Rubble Gazing instead of wall building", found in the Bible about the man of God sent to rebuild the gates and wall of a city. Something that is easy to do when our focus is on the spots on a person instead of were it should be focused on.

Proving wrong the assumption that "you cannot serve both God and money"
By Kathy K
Serving Two Masters? Reflections on God and Profit wasn't exactly what I expected. As a sole proprietor, it didn't quite address my particular situation in the manner I had hoped. With the reflections contained within running an average of 3-4 pages, I also found the chapter-closing Points to Ponder sections repetitive. They do, however, serve as a handy reference point for someone who doesn't have the time to read through a full chapter. All these things considered, from a personal standpoint, I give Serving Two Masters? an average rating. That, however, would not prevent me from recommending it to someone who better falls within its intended audience: managers of corporations. Geared toward corporate America, Serving Two Masters? offers some keen insight as to how God and financial profit can coexist. It also proves wrong the following assumption: "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money."

A legend in the making.
By frank mondane
My true review would be around 3.5 stars. I just got done finished reading the book so it is still fresh in my memory.

First of all, I believe Robbie Reyes is a really cool addition to the Marvel Universe who definitely needs to be explored more. Felipe Smith has done a really great job creating a fresh new character with different dynamics and problems.

The first volume of All-New Ghost Rider was in my opinion some really great work, a really hard tough act to follow; so it's understandable that this one was lackluster compared to the first.

The story is basically a follow up to the first volume, nothing new is really present except for the fact *SPOILERS* Dr. Zero has upgraded his pill. *END SPOILERS* Same enemies save for the fact that a new villain (who can be seen as a victim) has turned up.

The pacing is just like the races depicted in this book, fast and lucrative. Though at times it does slow down at appropriate times to give us some exposition.

The art is a big reason why my review dropped a little bit. The first volume had amazing art and Scott just can't really match what Moore did in the first volume. Sometimes it seems so jumbled and cramped at times you don't really know what's going on. Thank goodness for Smith taking over the art in the last two issues. There are some really great splash pages that I was staring at for minutes at a time.

All in all, it was a fun read that doesn't seem to take itself too seriously, but really faults itself for not concentrating on ideas they were trying to implement too late into the game. Hopefully after Secret Wars is over they will be able to expand on the life of Robbie Reyes and the All-New Ghost Rider.

By matthew
I recommend this series to anyone new to comics who is looking to get into marvel books. I read loads of comics and I have to say this comic has a really strong story, and it is impossible to put down. Now, the reason I did not give more stars is because of a personal issue: the art is ugly. I personally like the new Ghost Rider design (it grew on me) but as for everything else it is a train wreak of what I can only describe as "tattoo art." However the story by its self made me stick around and I was pleased to see the art take a more pleasant aesthetic in the last issue, I sincerely hope the keep the artist they used on the last issue of the volume for the rest of the series.

My (single, male, early 20's) roommates STOLE THIS BOOK!
By The Queen V
Yup, you read that right. My partying college roommates fell in love with this cookbook after I fixed a few meals from it. It was so easy to cook from and the food was so good, it started losing pages. Then it disappeared altogether. Cooking With Beer didn't even come close.

TOFU GOES WEST
By BillyDan
I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to include more tofu in their diet without becoming an Asian cook...I've been cooking with tofu for several years and have figured out a few ways to use it that are not traditional...but this book is full of fun EASY recipies using simple ingredients and producing delicious results that I never would have thought of on my own.

I'm now baking delicious muffins and amazing puddings using tofu! This is now my most used cookbook...of course I don't really use cookbooks much...probably because recipies call for ingredients that would cause me to make a grocery run...and I don't do that...I substitute...so most cookbooks don't work for me..but TOFU GOES WEST is based on simple cooking using simple ingredients and simple techniques...there is nothing fancy or difficult...BUT ALL THE RECIPIES ARE DELICIOUS and the ALL WORK! This is fast, simple cooking that produces excellent results.

As the title implies, it is NOT Asian cooking...Recipies are broken down into Main Dishes, Breads & Deserts. Some of my favorite Main Dishes are the TOFU PAN PIZZA, STUFFED BELL PEPPERS, CHILI CON TOFU and MUSHROOM SKILLET BAKE. Under Breads we love the Pan Fried Corn Cakes although we consider this more of a main dish than a bread and we add all sorts of veges to them including bell peppers and zucchini. The best muffins I've ever baked or eaten in my life are CINNAMON OAT MUFFINS using tofu...absolutely amazing muffin recipe. There are quite a few goodies under deserts also...LEMONY BREAD PUDDING, YAM PIE and a surprise MELLOW PUDDING using Molasses and Honey are all delicious.

It appears that this book is out of print and only available used. If you have any interest in replacing other forms of protein with Tofu and want an idea book...this is the book for you! It isn't a big book but it is HUGE on ideas that will get you started and keep you cooking healthy delicious meals!

Fond Memories
By Orchid Woman
Many years ago I found this book in the library and checked it out every chance I got. I loved the recipes in it and made them, repeatedly. One of my favorites was the Tofu Carrot Cake. it is outstanding: moist, flavorful and filled with dried fruit, nuts and carrots. Honestly, the best carrot cake I have ever eaten in my life. Many of my friends who ate the food I prepared from this book, said they would never eat tofu and, had no idea they were gobbling up the same when they ate my tofu lasagna. Great cook book, presented with humor and versatility. I am thrilled to find that I can still purchase a used copy of it for my cookbook collection.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2-The first book follows a boy who hates numbers until a special birthday present allows him to discover how important they are. The colorful, childlike cartoons support the action. The concept is relayed well enough though the story itself is not particularly inspired. The second story is disappointing. A ravenous Mrs. Wolf finds a duck egg and resolves to fatten the emerging duckling for dinner. She spends days at the hot stove making pancakes, jam tarts, and chocolate muffins. Later, they picnic with sandwiches and coffee. Then, instead of wanting to eat the little creature, she realizes she has become very attached to it. This is one dumb wolf and one confusing story. Why is she starving if she has so much food around her? Endpapers in both volumes provide ideas on sharing the books with youngsters.

Do I Eat You Little Duck, or Not??
By Dawn Woolcott
I found this book to be a little misleading...I loved the illustrations - they are darling and sweet and well done. But I found the story line a little too much for my 4 year old. The story is about a wolf who raises a baby duck - not because she loves it, but in order to fatten it up and make a nice juicy dinner for herself. Should I eat it now, or wait until it's bigger so it makes a bigger meal? I know, I know...real wolves eat real ducks in the real world, but I felt uncomfortable reading this storyline to my child at this point. Maybe for ages 5 or 6 and up.

From the author of the breathtaking bestsellers Outlander and Dragonfly in Amber, the extraordinary saga continues.

Their passionate encounter happened long ago by whatever measurement Claire Randall took. Two decades before, she had traveled back in time and into the arms of a gallant eighteenth-century Scot named Jamie Fraser. Then she returned to her own century to bear his child, believing him dead in the tragic battle of Culloden. Yet his memory has never lessened its hold on her... and her body still cries out for him in her dreams.

Then Claire discovers that Jamie survived. Torn between returning to him and staying with their daughter in her own era, Claire must choose her destiny. And as time and space come full circle, she must find the courage to face the passion and pain awaiting her...the deadly intrigues raging in a divided Scotland... and the daring voyage into the dark unknown that can reunite—or forever doom—her timeless love.

This triumphant conclusion to Gabaldon's time-travel trilogy was a PW bestseller.

From Library Journal
Time traveler Claire Randall first encountered Jamie Fraser, the fiery 18th-century Scottish clansman, in Outlander (Delacorte, 1991). The lovers continued their relationship in the best-selling Dragonfly in Amber (Delacorte, 1992). Now, in Voyager , Claire decides to return to the 18th century to reunite with her beloved. First printing: 60,000 copies.

From Booklist
The third of Gabaldon's novels featuring the time-traveling heroine Claire Randall covers her reunion with her twentieth-century husband, the birth of her daughter by eighteenth-century Scots clansman Jamie Fraser, and her training as a doctor. In due course, she feels driven to essay time traveling again, but reunion with Jamie takes place on the eve of Culloden. The pair's subsequent flight for life takes them to the West Indies and, finally, to a hair-raising shipwreck in the American colonies that hints there may be a fourth volume of Claire's adventures. Gabaldon handles the time-travel elements competently but subordinates them to classic historical romance--a big one, luxuriantly detailed and featuring highly appealing characters and an authentic feel to the background that speaks well of her research and writing. Recommended wherever Outlander and A Dragonfly in Amber found an audience. Roland Green

VOYAGER BRINGS IT ON HOME!!!
By lawyeraau
The third in a series of exceptionally well written time travel, adventure/romance books by the author, it tells a gripping and highly entertaining tale. There are four such novels published to date in what is hoped to be a series of six books. I urge the interested reader to start at the beginning and read each and every one. Do not be daunted by the length. Trust me when I say that you will wish that they were longer, so riveting a story does the author unfold. A masterful storyteller, the author employs the superlative use of historical events and period detail to weave an engaging three dimensional tapestry of timeless love and adventure. While the core of the story is about a love that transcends time, it is, however, much more than that. It is an adventure story that grips the reader from beginning to end and is positively addictive!
The love that spans time is that which twentieth century Englishwoman, Claire Randall, has for eighteenth century Scottish highlands warrior, James Fraser. Those readers who have read the first book in the series, "Outlander", know that in 1945, Claire, a combat nurse during World War II, is reunited with her husband, Frank, after the war. While on a second honeymoon in Scotland, she visits a strange, flat topped hill, where a forbidding stone circle draws her. Touching one of the stones, she is hurled through a vortex in time and finds herself in eighteenth century Scotland, where she meets a brave and brawny, red headed Scot, James Fraser, with whom she falls head over heels in love. Finding herself thrust into the midst of clan warfare and intrigue, she and her beloved 'Jamie' have enough adventures to last a lifetime.
The second book, "Dragonfly in Amber", is a continuation of that story, told from the perspective of the twentieth century where Claire, now a doctor, has lived for the past twenty years. Upon the death of her twentieth century husband, Frank, Claire returns to Scotland with her grown, red headed daughter, Brianna. There, she discloses to Brianna the events of her secret past, as well as the truth of whom Brianna's biological father truly is and of the love that Claire bore him.
While in Scotland, however, Claire discovers something that will forever change her future, as well as her past. You see, for the past twenty years, Claire has mistakenly believed that her beloved 'Jamie' died in the historic battle of Culloden. It was there that the Scottish highlanders bravely fought the English in a misguided attempt to restore Charles Stuart, their bonnie Prince Charlie, to the throne of England, only to be decimated on the battlefield. Those few who survived were branded as Jacobite traitors and imprisoned, and their families disenfranchised. It is this very event that Claire and 'Jamie' had conspired to change, only to fail.
Their story transports the reader from the turmoil of the Scottish highlands to the intrigue of the French Court and regales the reader with the adventures of the two lovers, as they conspire to change the very course of history. It was this valiant attempt that ultimately brought Claire and 'Jamie' to the crossroad that would compel them to part and have Brianna become a denizen of the twentieth century.
In "Voyager", Claire, now realizing that the love of her life and soulmate survived the battle of Culloden, makes the decision to go back in time and find James Fraser, as for the past twenty years her love for him has remained constant. Leaving her daughter, Brianna, she once more hurls herself into the vortex of time to eighteenth century Scotland to begin her search for James Fraser, in hope of being reunited with her 'Jamie'.
This book tells the story of what happened to Claire Randall and James Fraser in those intervening twenty years. It tells of their ultimate reunion and rediscovery. With historical events as a backdrop and an unforgettable cast of characters, it regales the reader with their new adventures, as Claire returns to a still divided, turmoil ridden Scotland. Reunited with James Fraser, none the worse for wear, they seek to make a life for themselves. As their love comes full circle, they take to the high seas, and their adventures continue. This compelling time travel saga is sure to captivate the reader.

claire and jamie reunite - at last!
By pontmarie
After finding out that Jamie survived the battle of Culloden, Claire makes the heartwrenching decision to leave her grown up daughter, Brianna behind in the present, and after a hilarious scene at a shop that sells period costumes, Claire finds her way back to the stones of Craigh na Dun and Jamie, who lives under various guises as merchant, printer and smuggler
Their reunion is passionate but not peaceful for long. Jamie and Claire's efforts to save his nephew, Ian take them to the West Indies where they meet Geillis Duncan, the time traveller from Outlander, who not only holds the boy hostage for her own sinister purposes, but who also threatens Brianna all the way in the twentieth century. Their final escape hurls them into a storm that nearly kills them all, but lands them in a new world - together.
Throughout the many twists, turns and revelations of incidents past, we never doubt Jamie. Not when he is constantly thrown from one danger to another, not even when he warns Claire that she might not want the man he has become. Her answer is our own, and her implicit trust in him is truly justified as he tries to explain every circumstance that fate has thrown at him. But he has changed. He has been forced by blackmail and loneliness into a loveless marriage with one woman and to father a son on another. These relationships will be explored in further installments of the series.
Claire has been dealt a rough hand in some ways, and she has also become tougher during the twenty years of separation from Jamie. Her profession of surgeon serves her well in this book and her decades of loneliness in the 20th century, while remembering the love she shared with Jamie, only strengthen that love when they rediscover each other and she sees how very much he has changed. Claire clings to the chance of happiness she knows she is lucky to have, even if it means leaving behind her beloved daughter.
The scene where Claire shows Jamie photographs of his daughter Brianna, taken at many stages in her life, is heartbreakingly tender with the pain of what could have been. Claire and Jamie do not dwell on this, but instead face each new challenge together. Old friends and nemeses are back, each of them adding their own piece of the puzzle to this intricate story, but Jamie and Claire are, again, the center of it all. We know them now and we cheer for each victory and despair at each cruel twist of fate.
In the end, the theme of Voyager is one of tremulous hope. Hope, because this is a new beginning for Claire and Jamie. After all their misunderstandings and disagreements have been dealt with, they find themselves on a new continent which represents their new chance at a life together. Tremulous because, let's face it, this is a Gabaldon novel, and we have not only Drums of Autumn after this installment, but two, or perhaps three more books. In any case, Voyager is a well-crafted work, not overwhelmed by the carefully detailed research that has gone into it, but supported by it.

Everlasting Love Found, Windswept Seas & Adventure Abound!
By Tracy Talley
The third in the 'Outlander' series and still kept me riveted. In this enstallment, Claire is in her own time and its twenty years later from the time she first went back (1945)and she has a daughter from Jamie, Brianna who is 20 years old.
Claire is now a succesful doctor living in Boston and still longs for her lost love, a Scottish warrior from the 18th century named Jamie Fraser. Her twentieth century husband Frank having passed away two years ago, Claire is feeling that heartwrenching pull to return to her love.
But how does a mother leave her only child to find a man she once knew and loved almost two hundred years ago? How does she explain this to the man's daughter who looks just like him? Just seeing Brianna makes her heart ache for Jamie.
With the help of Brianna and a friend who studies genealogy charts, Claire finds out that Jamie somehow survived the bloody Battle of Culloden! Dare she risk another trip through the stones to find him?
With understanding and the love from her daughter, Claire finds the support and courage she needs to take the plunge into the unknown with the knowledge that she may never again be able to return to the future and Brianna.
Seeing Jamie again nearly knocks the breath from her. Their love is still intact, even 20 years later. Trouble is still in the air, this time they are uprooted from the battlefields of Scotland to the exotic and mysterious West Indies. Coming face-to-face with an 18th century serial killer, Claire is the only one who can stop the madness.
Voodoo magic and political intrigue, Claire and Jamie are thrust on a voyage to the pits of humanity and must use their love and trust in one another to survive.
I thought the use of voodoo and the islands in the 1700's was unbelievable! It was so fascinating and kept you on your toes! Their journey through the world of magic and greed for life made sense and also explained things to me that I missed in the first novel 'Outlander'. The stones are more in depthly explained along with the travel of time. It was so unbelievable that I was engrossed for hours and hours and found it dark outside before I thought to even eat!
This is probably one of my favorites so far of the three I've read. It moved faster and with more excitement that the last (even though I loved 'Dragonfly') and I was sad to see it end, some 1050 pages later, lol.
The time spent apart made the heart grow fonder and I was happy to see the passion still well alive between them. I love Jamie anyway, and fell in love with him in 'Outlander', but in this, I loved him even more and wished I were Claire, lol. I am anxiously ready to plunge right into the fourth installment, 'Drums of Autumn', in the New World...

The Great Initiates, by Edward Schure, Edouard Schure

The Great Initiates encompasses long centuries of human existence and reflects our great search―the greatest search of all―the quest for the spirit. This book describes the motivations behind external history, the growth of religious striving, the rise and fall of cultures, and indicates their importance for us today. It reflects the lives and deeds of human beings of extraordinary stature: Rama, Krishna, Hermes, Moses, Orpheus, Pythagoras, Plato, and Jesus.

In these pages one witnesses spiritual adventure of a depth and intensity rarely experienced by creative human beings, even in their most exalted moments. This excitement of discovery which breathes through The Great Initiates may well explain its continuing popularity after over a century.

An insightfull and transcendent history
By J. L. Roylance
Written in a relaxed narrative, Schure rolls out exactly what he promises, ' a study of the secret history of religions',
Centered upon the primary charismatic genius of Rama, Krishna, Moses, Orpheus, Pythagorous, Plato, and Jesus Christ, Schure ties together a greatly compelling story of the history and manifestation of revelation and enlightenment in human history,
A great read.

Tales of Mystery and Imagination
By Dale E. Essary
First published in 1889 in France, "The Great Initiates" (TGI) reflects the author's lifelong quest for spiritual truth along the myriad byways of mythology and esoterica. According to the book's introductory biography, the author had experienced a "divine vision" in the cathedral of Strausbourg as a young boy shortly after the death of his mother. Orphaned in his youth, he later dedicated himself to recreating the sacred drama found in the Eleusinian Mysteries of ancient Greece for the purpose of modern consumption. The efforts of this calling, the author was convinced, would rekindle the spiritual awareness of the ancient world in what he considered to be the vacuous materialism of modern society. It was from a subsequent series of "visitations" that the author embarked upon what became a ten-year literary effort, which culminated with his list of the top seven prophets of all time: Rama, Krishna, Hermes, Moses, Orpheus, Pythagoras, and Jesus. The author had been made aware of the common source of spiritual illumination disseminated through these great initiates, whose all-encompassing theme includes such doctrines as reincarnation, panentheism, henotheism, and the "divine spark" within man. However, this prosaic sojourn is launched from the shores of incredulity. Chapter One considers the origins of humanity "according to esoteric traditions" (p. 36). Human civilization first began about five thousand years ago with the red race, having thrived on the "southern continent [i.e., Plato's Atlantis], while all of Europe and part of Asia were still under water" (37). This ill-fated journey forges on, plowing through the rolling waves of implausibility first by redefining mythology, then by rewriting history. Krishna becomes the "first of the Messiahs," the "eldest of the sons of God" (p. 79). Hence, with TGI's treatise on Krishna we see a pattern of messianic similitude emerge through parallel accounts of the Gospels' Virgin Birth (Chapter 8), the Sermon on the Mount (p. 111-112), the Good Samaritan (p. 112), the miraculous catch of fishes (p. 112), a woman anointing his feet (p. 114), and the triumphal entry into the temple city (p. 115-116). Moreover, Krishna is seen as having volunteered himself to be sacrificed as a reconciliatory offering, allowing his foes to tie him to a tree and pierce him with arrows in the chest. However, as Hindu scriptures have it, Krishna was incarnated as the seventh son of a married couple named Devaki and Vasu-deva, and was killed by a hunter who mistook him for a deer and shot him in the heel with a magic-laced arrow. TGI's normalization efforts continue by making Moses out to be a blood relative of Rameses and an initiate of Osiris (p. 172), whose Egyptian name was Hosarsiph (p. 178). Upon emerging from a ritual-induced coma to expatiate the murder of an Egyptian guard, the reborn visionary took to the desert with his new name Moses which, according to esoteric wisdom, means "The Saved One" (p. 186). Although TGI does not care to enlighten us as to which language this translation stems from, we know for sure that it was not taken from the Hebrew, in which Moses' name means "drawn out of the water," which is precisely what Pharaoh's daughter had done when she adopted the infant Moses (Exodus 2:10). But never mind that TGI lacks linguistic finesse, for a true understanding of Genesis is at hand. Having been so heavily influenced by Egyptian culture, Moses had originally written Genesis in hieroglyphics, the language of choice for those whose intentions are to embed multiple and hidden meanings into their prose. Alas, all but the "shallowest" of meanings were lost through subsequent translations, and Moses' original intent can now only be meted out with the aid of Kaballistic decoder rings and a little guidance from the learned. On a more tangible note, esoteric history has it that Moses led the Exodus with little resistance during an opportunistic time when Pharaoh Menephtah was predisposed to repelling an advancing Lybian army (p. 204-205). While there is no record of any Menephtah, there was a Pharaoh named Merneptah (1212-1202 B.C.), son of Seti I, who had defeated invaders from the Aegean Sea and had desolated Israel in the process. More down-to-earth historians have it that the Pharaoh of the Exodus was probably either Amunhotep II (ca. 1446 B.C.) or Rameses II (ca. 1290 B.C.). Last but not least, the good ship TGI ventures into stormy waters as it reinvents Jesus to render him worthy of the initiate's crown. The pre-existence of reincarnated souls is promulgated through Jesus by taking John 8:58 out of context (p. 427). It was through membership in the Essene cult that Jesus learned the esoteric teachings of Krishna, Osiris, Orpheus, and Pythagoras during his young adulthood (p. 438). Forget that no particular reason is given as to why a person brought up in an orthodox Jewish home would not have reviled these pagan teachings, and would have embraced the apocryphal Book of Enoch with great enthusiasm, from which the Essenes drew their knowledge regarding the Son of Man (p. 439). And wouldn't you know it, just as was the fate of Moses' contributions to higher meaning, the deeper esoteric teachings of Jesus were lost to antiquity by the second-century compilers of the Synoptic Gospels. No wonder, then, that much clarification is in order; it seems that the heavenly beings observed by the three apostles during the Transfiguration were not Moses and Elijah as recorded in the Gospels, but the six initiates that had preceded Jesus (p. 473)! Cap these novel concepts with denials of the Virgin Birth, the bodily resurrection, and the Second Coming, and our final destination emerges upon the horizon before us. However, there comes a time when some passengers aboard a ship without sails or a rudder may want to consider abandoning ship and taking their chances in the dinghy, for the captain of this cruise is of the opinion that, in addition to the initiate Jesus, angels have the power to forgive (p. 460). Imagine that.

The Great Schure!
By Ryan Kouroukis
This is perhaps the most Noble and Grandiose account of history, culture and religion that exists in narrative form.

Edouard Schure is surely a Master. An Ever Inspirer.

No one I have ever read has been able to produce the same effects in my Soul than Schure.

Whoever reads this book with his soul will finally be able to see "The-All" like when one climbs the 9 symphonic mountains of Anton Bruckner.

This novel should be read along side Schure's other famous treatise "From Sphinx to Christ - An Occult History", (for futher details, clarifications and explantions not included in "The Great Initiates").
