About the Author

Martin L. A. Sternberg, Ed.D., is a native New Yorker. Deaf since the age of seven, he has spent most of his career working with deaf people. The idea for this book came from Dr. Elizabeth Peet, Dr. Sternberg's sign language teacher at Gallaudet University (for the deaf), in Washington, DC. Dr. Sternberg kept Dr. Peet's ideas and methods, but expanded the work greatly. Early work on the project received a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare to New York University, the sponsoring institution. A graduate of the City College of New York, American University, and New York University, Dr. Sternberg has enjoyed a distinguished career as a teacher at Gallaudet, New York, Hofstra, and Adelphi Universities. HE is currently chairman of the board of trustees of Lexington School for the Deaf and Lexington Center for the Deaf. He is the author of four ASL dictionaries and a Codies Award-winning CD-ROM, all published by HarperCollins. He also received Emmy and Peabody nominations for his ASL series by the NBC network, "Speaking With Your Hands," as well as medals at various international film and television festivals.

Conceptually accurate and easy to understand

Since I have a Deaf daughter, I am sometimes asked to recommend a book to help interested persons learn sign language. Although any book can only be implimented to supplement good videos or working with a skilled signer, this one definitely will assist users in recalling signs or learning new ones.

The descriptive definition acts as a helpful word picture of the sign. The information also shows users the different English "words" one sign can represent, so they can be sure they are choosing conceptually-accurate signs to convey what they wish to communicate (think of the many uses of the word "run").

Helpful also - and often very necessary - is the use of more than one drawing to show the progression of the sign, clarifying the written explanation. And since expression is vital in signing, the facial drawings can provide nuances that are important for clear communication.

The American Sign Language Dictionary is one than can be depended on to show the correct ASL signs, instead of English-based ones that find their way into many sign language dictionaries. It's a great resource!

This is a great resource for me since I have recently started to learn ASL, and the explanations of how to move the hands to complete the entire sign are detailed and easy to follow.

The things they CAN'T teach you at Harvard Business School

Mark McCormack is Founder, Chairman and CEO of sports marketing company International Management Group (IMG). He was named 'the most powerful man in sports' by Sports Illustrated.
In this book McCormack does not so much criticize Harvard Business School as the title suggests, but complements the traditional business school-education with 'street smarts' - "the ability to make active, positive use of your instincts, insights, and perceptions." (Funnily enough, McCormack did not even attend the HBS, he has a law degree from Yale.) "My main purpose in writing this book is to fill in many of the gaps - the gaps between a business school education and the street knowledge that comes from day-to-day experience of running a business and managing people." He splits the 'street smarts' and this book up into three parts: People, sales and negotiation, and running a business. With each part consisting of 4-to-6 chapters.
In the first part McCormack discusses matters related to people, such as reading people, creating impressions, preparation for business situations, and improving your career. "Business situations always come down to people situations. And the more - and the sooner - I know about the person I am dealing with, the more effective I'm going to be." In the second part of the book - Sales and Negotiation - the author dicusses sales, negotiations and marketing. Sales and negotiations are probably the strongest point of both the book and McCormack, he really excels here. ...The third part of the book - Running a Business - is probably the weakest part of the book. Although there are some great one-liners, it is clear that the author is not that much at ease with writing about organization structures, policies and procedures. In fact, it looks like he despises most of these subjects. However, in the final chapter he provides some good advice for entrepreneurs and people thinking about starting their own business.
Yes, I do like this book. It is somewhat unconventional and is not really a business/management book. The examples from his experiences in sports marketing are exceptional and extremely useful. A Must For All Levels of Managemet

This was one of the first business/management books I purchasd upon my graduation from college in 1988. Since that time, I find myself reading the book atleast once every 12 to 18 months to refreash my memory as well as my attitude. Mark's common sense straight forward approach is second to none! This book made such an impression on me that it is now required reading for all of my managemnet personnel and all new hires are given a copy on their start date of employment with my company.

Clever Title, Disappointing Content

I eagerly made my way through this book, in search of insights that might live up to the intriguing title of this book. What I found disappointed me: rather blas� anecdotes that seemed to be saying, "Look at me... see what I've done? Aren't I something?" Mark McCormack has obviously achieved great success, but his musings left me unfulfilled just the same. The basic premise of this book (listen to and take care of people, and beware arrogance) is sound, but for hard-hitting, meaty commentary, I'd look elsewhere.

About the Author
Maurizio Calbi is Professor of English Literature at the University of Salerno, Italy. He is the author of Approximate Bodies: Gender and Power in Early Modern Drama and Anatomy and has published on Shakespeare and early modern culture, screen adaptations, postcolonial literature, and postcolonial rewritings of Shakespeare.

An instant classic! The two blurbs say it all

I have little to add to the two super positive and highly informative blurbs by Mark Thornton Burnett and Douglas Lanier except to say that I think this book should be of interest to all Shakespeareans. I will adopt it as a textbook in my courses. I do hope it comes out in paperback. it would be wonderful to teach a course on Shakespeare's media ghosts, using Calbi's book, Kahan's Shakespiritualism: Shakespeare and the Occult, 1850-1950, and Burt and Yates' What's the Worst Thing You Can Do to Shakespeare?? Palgrave is building quite a splendid list.

Man-machine interaction is the gateway providing access to functions and services, which, due to the ever increasing complexity of smart systems, threatens to�become a bottleneck. This book therefore introduces not only advanced interfacing concepts, but also gives insight into the related theoretical background.This refers mainly to the realization of video-based multimodal interaction via gesture, mimics, and speech, but also to interacting with virtual object in virtual environments, cooperating with local or remote robots, and user assistance.

While most publications in the field of human factors engineering focus on interface design, this book puts special emphasis on implementation aspects. To this end it is accompanied by software development environments for image processing, classification, and virtual environment implementation. In addition a test data base is included for gestures, head pose, facial expressions, full-body person recognition, and people tracking. These data are used for the examples throughout the book, but are also meant to encourage the reader to start experimentation on his own.

Thus the book may serve as a self-contained introduction both for researchers and developers of man-machine interfaces. It may also be used for graduate-level university courses.

Breathtaking, Inspiring, and Unforgettable!

Valentine Hound Dog is an extraordinarily beautiful and tremendously poignant story that serves as a gentle reminder that no one should settle for less than who they are and what they want. Many things in this life may serve to impress on us that we aren’t what we should be and because of that we have no right to pursue our heart’s desire. This is such a huge lie that we really need to stop listening to. Instead, we need to begin to listen more to our heart and let it guide us to where we need to be and allow it to change our way of thinking and living. What is the purpose of living a half empty and dreadfully unfulfilled life?

Jenna has lived the stereotype of being the beautiful daughter that got away with murder because of her outward grace and attractiveness. She used that asset to her advantage throughout her career in the design world. As the glam and glitz slowly begin to lose its overall appeal, she watches as the bitter fa�ade of her world begins to fall away to reveal the ugliness and the emptiness that has left her cold and lonely. She craves something real, something true, and something lasting, and she finds this unexpectedly in her family friend Larry. Larry is not a new project for her but a symbol of the life she has missed out on, and no matter what happens, she refuses to be denied what could be her one and only opportunity to live a truly fulfilled and happy life.

I can honestly say that with each new story that Rachelle Ayala brings to life, she continues to solidify and prove her literary prowess. While some authors manage to turn my head with some truly breathtaking stories, I always find that my heart will never fail to return to authors like Ayala whose unwavering inspiration and incredible talent always reminds me that anything is truly possible if we want it bad enough and fight for it hard enough. Greenly started her day off just like any other except for being able to successfully dodge another blind date attempt by her sister. That in itself was a miracle. A good distraction to her day was attending her oldest nephew’s baseball game. Her peace started and ended at that exact second because everything that followed felt like one disaster after another. The main witness to her beautiful train wreck was one beautiful and kind man named Roman. He was a friend of the family and way too kind during each of her tragic episodes. Has Greenly managed to find and scare off the only man she has ever been interested in due to her lack of grace, or will Roman prove that not everything is as it seems?

Greenly and Roman both took my breath away but for very different reasons. Greenly was so overwhelmed by Roman that she didn’t know how to deal with it. While not used to having good experiences with men, she doesn’t have any good experiences to draw on to help her out. She is left with acting like herself around him which makes her feel truly unworthy the more she gets to know the type of man he is. While the story is told from Greenly’s point of view, we still see how Roman reacts to her and series of accidents. He shows his interest and how far he is willing to go to prove to her that his interest hasn’t wavered no matter what she does or thinks. He seems to be a genuine guy who loves his son and only want to take care of him and shield their hearts. It would seem that the deeper the hole that Greenly digs her into, the more Roman’s interest in her grows.

DelSheree Gladden has weaved a beautifully touching story that will silently and subtly decimate the defenses around your heart. You will find yourself falling in love with her extraordinary characters before you realize what is happening. It’s the gentle spirit and the quiet strength within the beautiful words of this book that will slowly transform the deepest parts of your soul into something you never expected. This journey is an incredible treasure that needs to be shared with everyone who enjoys a deeply fulfilling experience like no other.

A Feline Fix is a wonderfully heartfelt story of learning why life is truly worth living. All of us at one time or another tend to forget the little in life that shine so brought and warm us from the inside out. We need to be reminded of what is most important, and this book helps to serve as that reminder. This is a perfect story to warm you all the way to your toes on a bold, blustery day.

Wendy can’t understand why her boss thinks she needs to work on her life-fun balance. She’s just fine, and she doesn’t need any adjustments in her opinion. However, she can’t argue when he sends her off from work and tells her not to return until all of her built up time has been used. Determined to make the best of it, she pushes forward with a newly created to-list. Callum is ending his shift as he finds Wendy completing item number one on her list. He isn’t looking for another relationship, but the sweet, unassuming Wendy pulls him in a magnet. Will his jaded squelch her growing enthusiasm, or will Wendy take life by the apron strings and pull herself up despite Callum?

I was thoroughly bewitched by Wendy and Callum. These two polar opposite personalities pulled the other out of their slump so easily that it was such a beautiful sight to behold. They were exactly what the doctor ordered, and yet they both fought hard to stop it from happening. I loved how honest they were to each other even if they couldn’t admit that how they acted and what they said were in direct contrast. What beautifully, enchanting characters this story contains! I fell in love with them before I even realized it. That is the mark of a great story!

Caroline Bell Foster is a truly impressive author who knows how to weave beautifully encouraging words straight into your heart. She held my heart in the palm of her hand, and while it may have cracked a couple of times it remolded into something a little better and brighter as a result. I would recommend this story to romance readers everywhere! This is a brilliant author who definitely understands that even an unassuming love can be an incredibly powerful love.

It was funny, sweet and the characters were amazing

I read RACHELLE AYALE's HOUND DOG KISSES and could not put it down. It was funny, sweet and the characters were amazing. Jenna was overwhelmed with getting her fashion show ready. She was very focused and wanted to have the firefighters from her brothers station be in the auction. They also wanted to include Larry, a retired firefighter due to injuries he sustained trying to save a child from a burning building.

Jenna is trying to help her brother get over the death of his dog and decides to get him a puppy. Harley is not your typical firehouse dog. He is low to the ground, drools everywhere and his big ears get in the way when he runs. The dog is described so well, that I wanted to grab him and hug him . He is a big part of this cute romantic story. The author writes with humor, and details that make the story cone to life and characters that are mesmerizing.

This is a must read for all romance readers and everyone that loves dogs. Can Harley play Cupid and get Larry and Jenna together? What happens at the auction that upsets Larry? Grab a copy of this great adventure and sit back and enjoy a story filled with love, getting over past hurts and a loveable puppy that brings happiness to everyone.

I read the Valentine Hound Dog by Rachelle Ayala. I received an ARC of Valentine Hound Dog what an awesome book. Once I started reading it I found it so hard to put down. When the book started out I really felt sorry for Jenna. She seemed like someone who was always used to getting her way no matter what. The book made you laugh, made you cry and I you had to keep reading to see what happened next. I felt like this was part of my family and I really missed them when I finished the book.

A must read for anyone.
