I’ve gone back and repurchased a lot of the CDs I sold off—which, thanks to the bargain bin at Half-Price Books, has actually been a fairly inexpensive proposition—and reacquainted myself with groups that I once adored before they died off, broke up, or settled into respectable but uninspired careers. My goal is to rediscover what I saw in these bands when I was a teenager, and figure out why the music went from enlightening to deadening so rapidly, from the bucolic early years of Lollapalooza to the apocalyptic assault of Woodstock ’99. Because as easy as it is now to take potshots at the mumbly, histrionic sounds of the ’90s, this is music that meant a great deal to me and many others at the time. Out of respect for my teenaged self, I’m giving it an honest re-examination.

Each installment of Whatever Happened To Alternative Nation? will be tied to a year, starting with 1990—which I’m packaging with this introduction, since it’s really a prologue year—and proceed chronologically up through 1999. However, this isn’t intended to be a definitive history of grunge; I won’t be writing about every single Seattle band, or even most Seattle bands. A lot of it won’t even be about grunge; I also plan on looking at the feel-good bro tunes of Sublime, and the ironic arena-rock posturing of Urge Overkill, among other groups, and how they fit in with the overall narrative of ’90s alt-rock’s rise and fall. I promise I’ll completely overlook at least one of your favorite bands; please don’t take it personally.

As a general rule, I’m interested in discussing ’90s bands that were played regularly on MTV and on the radio, even in a small city like my hometown of Appleton, Wisconsin, because this was the last time (as of now, anyway) that rock music acted as the engine under the hood of American pop culture. Inevitably, this series will reflect what I liked and cared about back then, which fortunately matches up with what millions of other teenaged residents of Alternative Nation liked and cared about. More than an exercise in nostalgia—or, worse, an excuse to pick on bands that haven’t aged all that well—I hope to give those who deserve it their due, and maybe figure out how something that seemed so promising at the time went so wrong." - excerpt from Whatever Happened To Alternative Nation?

Great Overview of 90's Alternative Music

Steven Hyden's "Whatever Happened to Alternative Nation?" is a great overview of the rise and fall of 90's alternative music. The eBook is neatly divided by year (1990-1999) and covers many of the shifts and changes in pop culture by focusing in on select bands. As someone who was vaguely informed by the alternative music, "Whatever Happened..." proves to be an interesting and surprisingly compelling read. Much of the narrative is told through the autobiographical experience of the author and his relationship with the alternative music scene -- importantly, these autobiographical touches never feel pretentious, presumptuous, or self-indulgent.

I'm giving this book 4 stars out of 5; even though the book is well priced, the entirety of it (aside from the introduction) is available freely online through the AV Club. This eBook, in some respects, is not quite as nice as the original articles from which they are pulled. The original articles contained pictures and videos that helped flesh out the experience of the alternative nation -- the eBook format strips the story of these features so that the reader is left only with the prose.

Then again, it is pretty great prose.

Very good book

I used this book as a reference for my anatomy and physiology class in college and found it be right on target. I like the way the author explains these sometimes hard to understand topics. However, the book was not boring. If you want to really get an "A" buy the following books which are sold on amazon:
Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations Vol 1(ISBN: 0971999619) and
Vol 2 (ISBN: 0971999627). These books focus on the type of questions that A and P teachers ask on college exams. My study group and I used this and it helped us all get excellent grades.

Clear and readable text on a complex subject

Amazingly for a book on such a subject, this easy to read and beautiful to look at text is a joy! It is very clearly laid out with content outlines at the beginning of each section and revision guides at the end. It may not be the most in-depth work on anatomy and physiology but it is certainly one of the most accessible. If you want a thorough introduction to the subject and you want to feel inspired to learn more, buy this book!

Chock full of technical data-a tinkerer's dream

This is the BIBLE of A-Series engine tuning for a reason. Yes, it is a bit outdated but so is the A-Series engine. There really hasn't been too much major development since this printing.
Vizard covers ever topic in fantastic depth and gives real world data and anecdotes to every aspect of the engine. Each subsection on it's own would be worth the purchase price if only for obtaining a full understanding of part function.
This book is not a quick guide to get a few HP from your engine, it is a comprehensive take on every aspect of the engine and how it can be modified.
The pictures are old but plentiful and the layout is fairly poor but the information is all there.

Very detailed and informative

If you want to know the most effective tuning methods for the A-series engine, this is the book. Don't look at this book as a build guide with bolt torque specs and assembly instructions, but rather a high level guide to plan the components for a high-performance engine build or for which "bolt-on" performance parts can give your current engine a little boost. As an added bonus, Mr. Vizard occasionally drops some subtle humor for a book that is not as dry a read as you would expect.

There are quite a few resources these days for the MG/Morris/Austin enthusiast looking to soup up his or her little Midget or Mini cooper, but this book remains a standard go-to reference for getting the most power out of these little engines while discussing the compromises you have to make to do so. Anyone with an 'A' series engine under their bonnet, who is looking for that little extra bit of knowledge (sometimes way too much information, actually) will love this book.

Journalist Kaye spent the 2000-01 season with the defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers during their up-and-down quest for a repeat title. Coach Phil Jackson's teams are noted for running the Triangle Offense, but what is most evident in following his Lakers is that the Kobe Bryant/ Shaquille O'Neal/Phil Jackson triangle often took on soap-opera proportions. That soap opera is the focus of Kaye's book as she tries to explain how a championship team could implode so quickly in the regular season and then turn things around and come together as a team once again in time for the playoffs. At press time, the season appeared to be following the same story line, and if it ends the same way as last season, the Lakers can truly boast of the dynasty noted in the title of this work. THE AUTHOR OF THIS BOOK HAS NO EXPERIENCE COVERING SPORTS. IN HER FIRST ATTEMPT I THINK SHE DOES A VERY GOOD JOB DESCRIBING THE CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON OF THE 2000 LAKERS. THE DETAILED RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE PLAYERS IS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THIS BOOK. NOT ONLY KOBE AND SHAQ BUT ALL THE OTHER PLAYERS ARE OF INTEREST IN THIS STORY. FROM ROBERY HORRY TO RICK FOX TO PHIL JACKSON, YOU FIND OUT SOMETHING INTERESTING ABOUT EACH ONE OF THEM. BUT THE MAIN STORY IS THE COMING OF AGE OF KOBE FROM A BALL HOG TO A COMPLETE PLAYMAKER AND PASSER. I RECOMMEND THIS FOR ALL BASKETBALL FANS.

Nothing new for real fans

This is a good book for part-time Laker fans. They get to learn a lot about locker room stories.
But if you're someone who regularly follow the Lakers'exploits during the season, on the internet or otherwise, you're not getting any wiser by reading this book. The author was just repeating articles form the LA Times, OCR and other sources. Reading passages in the book you get the feeling that you've already read that somewhere else.
This ain't a David Halberstram book.

Good solid book

I'm not a mechanical engineer and I have been able to follow the book well. It goes really in depth in some places, so you have to know when to skip a few pages. But it is fine for a final year undergrad course, and I'm sure it would work for a grad course as well, but if you don't have a good math and science background (ie engineering), then just research [...] and then subscribe to a few car magazines. There is a lot of practical info in here as well, but don't kid yourself, most of this is theoretical backround. I am an electrical engineer who wanted to get into hybrid vehicles, and I think if you are like me and want to just buy one book on ICEs, this is it.

Better health

This is a great quick reference book for alternatives to traditional medicine. There is more research required by the reader for treatments (dosages are not included always) but it's definately a great starting point. I'm not following the suggestions to the letter, but the guidance it provides is very beneficial and points me in the right direction for further research.

This book has become my health bible. It gives you what you will not get from most doctors -- a diet and lifestyle based approach to treating/managing/correcting various ailments and illnesses. The authors do a fantastic job of describing why our dependence on pills and medicines to solve our health problems is simply not sufficient and often leads to more harm than good in the long term. At the same time, they offer practical remedies and treatments that can replace or supplement conventional medical treatment. Every mother, college student, bachelor, etc. should have this book. It makes a great gift as well.
