A missed opportunity
By Horst Freyhofer
The book (third edition)is a treasure for those who like to scan the views of well-know public figures (Leon Trotzky, George Kennan, Winston Churchill, etc.) and scholars (H. Stuart Hughes, Walter Laqueur, Francis Fukuyama, etc.) on topics of general interest (Bolshevik Revolution, Holocaust, European Unity, etc.) pertaining to the 20th century. The book's title is "An Age of Conflict." The perhaps most traumatic conclict in the know history of humans is World War II. Reading the book can leave one wonder whether it ever occured. The war receives mention in chapters entitled "The Nazis" or "Resistance or Collaboration," but the contributions by the various authors lack overarching coherence because there is no overarching plot to be found of this event in this rendition of the age of conflict. As a result, the book should generate much confusion among students of history who are not familiar with the subject. Others may indeed learn from it.

Kin of Kings (The Kin of Kings Book 1), by B.T. Narro

The first great war of Ovira is over and the most hated king in centuries is dead, but his nephew still lives. However, Basen had nothing to do with the destructive war his uncle started. In fact, it was his uncle who exiled him and his father to the territory of their enemies, where Basen’s dreams of becoming a legendary mage now fade as he must work all day just to eat. His only chance at regaining some semblance of the life he thought he would lead is to join an elite school that trains, houses, and feeds a thousand new young men and women each year. But little does Basen know that his determination will put him at the center of a war even bloodier than the one he’d barely managed to avoid.

the nephew of a hated king recently killed for his crimes
By Mike Vail
With an intricate, action-filled plot, in which mystery and twists are seamlessly woven, it was hard to put this book down. Basen, the nephew of a hated king recently killed for his crimes, has to carve out a life for himself in a foreign land full of people who despise his family. But the story doesn't dwell on him being rejected. You'll find no whining in this book. It jumps into the plot quickly: the Academy and the conflicts surrounding it. Basen has high hopes for himself, and the skills and charm for his determination to pay off, but the world he's in is brutal, setting him up for the challenge of his life.

The characters have all earned their place in the story by having their own goals and determination, making them seem very realistic. The story is ultimately about Basen, but I really got a feel for what life is like for nearly all the characters as well as a good notion of the world they live in. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Decent plot, rushed writing
By Dan Nikolaides
The idea and plot setup is good but the author rushes by quite a bit of character and world development opportunities with very direct and shallow writing. It's almost like they're trying to hurry you past all the important details and through the plot outline. New concepts, magic elements, locations, people, etc are introduced without any setup or subtlety, usually in dialogue like "hey main character, have you heard of x brand new concept that is now really important". It's like the author has a lot of stuff in their head but is impatient to get it into yours, so they just rush through everything. There's a lot of "told but not shown". The dialogue is also very YA in terms of its simplicity where characters usually just blurt out what they are thinking or feeling. The style is ok at times, but this book should have been twice as long for the same plot to properly develop everything, and this author should invest more in world and character building, and subtlety in dialogue and presentation. Not every fantasy novel needs to be a 900 page epic, but stories need room to breathe, and this had none.

Short and sweet. A good read. Lots of things happen in the telling, love, battles, and betrayal. Keep them coming.

By Pedro M. Rosario Barbosa

The book present what espiritismo really means. I think that it will be of great help to the people of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean to read this book. The author has done magnificent research. I recommend the book - as a historian involved in popular religiosity , and how it has to be depurated.

Art in Public: Politics, Economics, and a Democratic Culture, by Lambert Zuidervaart

This book examines fundamental questions about funding for the arts: Why should governments provide funding for the arts? What do the arts contribute to daily life? Do artists and their publics have a social responsibility? Challenging questionable assumptions about the state, the arts, and a democratic society, Lambert Zuidervaart presents a vigorous case for government funding, based on crucial contributions the arts make to civil society. He argues that the arts contribute to democratic communication and a social economy, fostering the critical and creative dialogue that a democratic society needs. Informed by the author's experience leading a nonprofit arts organization as well as his expertise in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, this book proposes an entirely new conception of the public role of art with wide-ranging implications for education, politics, and cultural policy.

Review
"... this volume presents a strong philosophical defense of government funding of the arts in democratic cultures. It takes issue with philosophers such as Rawls, Dworkin, and Feinberg. Although its arguments are heavily philosophical, they are deeply engaged with the sociocultural dimensions - the economic, social-political, and general cultural justifications - of art ... This is a major scholarly discussion on the subject ... Highly recommended ..."
R. E. Palmer, Choice

"Anyone who has followed the periodic "culture wars" that break out whenever some outraged congressman attacks a piece of government funded art he or she finds offensive and is counter-attacked by an equally outraged critic who defends artists' freedom to do anything they want will find this book a welcome relief ... Zuidervaart offers a philosophically sophisticated reflection that exposes the false assumptions shared by both "traditionalists" and "transgressivists" ... the book is extremely well organized, the writing clear, and careful conceptual distinctions abound ... One of the book's great strengths is its comprehensiveness ... for those who are looking for a more thoughtful and well grounded consideration of the issue of government funding and, above all, of the appropriate place of the arts in our social and political life, Zuidervaart has given us an indispensible book."
Larry Shiner, Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews

"... I highly recommend Art in Public to anyone interested in public art in general, and for [anyone] involved in more specific discussions about government funding of the arts, it should be required reading."
Jason Simus, The Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism

"The central aim of Lambert Zuidervaart's Art in Public can be stated in a phrase: to defend direct state subsidies for non-profit arts organizations ... That art is currently in the stage of wholesale global institutionalization makes Zuidervaart's account of its relation to justice and democracy invaluable."
