A messy introduction to the subject

I found this book rather disappointing and short of information. If it was intended as a general introduction to applied and environmental geomorphology several topics deserved a much more in-depth treatment (a most conspicuous example, fluvial geomorphology...). A better balance could have been achieved regarding the relative importance of several issues: splash erosion by raindrops gets a very clear and extensive treatment, whereas coastal geomorphology and hillslope processes and hazards are hastily dealt with in relatively too few pages. I also noticed a strikingly incoherent attitude towards quantitative geomorphology and mathematical modelling: soil erosion and the general assessment of human impact on landforms are introduced on a quantitative basis, even exceedingly so if one considers the scope and purpose of the book; yet, such an approach is simply omitted in reporting about seismic risk or riverine processes. There is an evident bias toward work and experiences conducted by the author and his coauthors, which somewhat shrinks the scope of many discussions. Last, but not least, their English is not up to the level of a scientific textbook aimed at an international readership, and about a quarter of cited works and authors are not to be found in the list of references! I'd say the strong point of their book is in the last two chapters, offering a good outline of procedures and methods for assessing and mapping geomorphic risk and hazard, as well as the opposite trends of human interference with the environment (still from a geomorphic perspective). All in all, a honest but minimal and idiosyncratic introduction to the subject. It's definitely not worth its price, and if you're looking for something seriously informative, then you're adviced to study on something else...

About the Author
Tom Fettke holds degrees from Oakland City College and California State University at Hayward. He has taught music in both public and Christian schools and has served as a church choir director and minister of music in churches large and small for over 30 years. He is in considerable demand as a guest conductor, clinician, and worship leader. Tom is also a composer, arranger, and producer of music and recordings for the contemporary Christian church and has been associated with Lillenas Publishing Company since 1973. He and his wife, Jan, have two married sons and seven grandchildren. Camp Kirkland graduated from Florida State University with Bachelor and Master of Music Education degrees, and went on to teach band at the elementary, secondary and collegiate levels. He has performed on euphonium and trombone with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra,River City Brass Band and a number of touring bands and orchestras. Camp is best known for his pioneer work in reestablishing instrumental music as a viable medium in today’s church. His position as Instrumental Director at First Baptist Church in Jacksonville was the first of its kind. With several hundred choral and instrumental publications, Camp Kirkland remains a leader in the church orchestra growth phenomenon. He is also much in demand as a conductor and seminar clinician. Camp is currently a free lance composer and arranger residing with his wife, Fran, in Florida.

Some signs of age, and poorly printed (3.0 to 3.5 stars)

This review is based on using this book as a reference, not on reading it all the way through. One of the strengths of the book is its discussion of the classification of surfaces. It also has a great deal about "voltage graphs," a/k/a gain graphs, a topic that apparently was hot in the 1970s and 1980s, but that you won't find mentioned in modern textbooks like Diestel, Bollab�s or Bondy. (While the two latter books have short sections on electrical networks as an example, a voltage graph was a much broader concept.) As of the end of August 2015, I found only 25 papers on the arXiv that mention voltage or gain graphs in their abstracts, spread over a more than 10-year period.

That's not the only indication that the vocabulary and research areas about graphs on surfaces have come a long way since this book's publication date in 1987 -- in particular, you won't find anything about such current areas of interest as the application of graph theory to knots and links, nor anything about Tutte, Penrose, etc. polynomials, even though these ideas had already been published prior to the book's appearance.

The lack of answers or hints to exercises is definitely a drawback to self-study, despite what another reviewer has proposed. The book has both a "References" list and a "Bibliography," though the difference between them isn't clearly spelled out. (The Dover edition has a supplemental bibliography from around 2001.) There is a subject index only - no name index, so, e.g., you won't be able to find references to Tutte or anyone else very easily.

What really moved me to write this review was the deterioration in Dover's printing. I've been getting their books since the 1960s, and although the books stopped being bound with thread in the 1980s or so, this year (2015) I've gotten a couple of Dovers that really shocked me. This is one of them. The print is fuzzy and unpleasant to read, the paper has a lot of show-through, the product feels bulky: it looks like your usual lousy academic press digital transfer job. And the book doesn't even describe itself as being printed: it was "**Manufactured** in the United States by Courier Corporation." I've bought plenty of Dovers since 2000, when Courier acquired Dover (before being itself acquired by R.R. Donnelly this year); but either it's only recently that they shifted to lower printing quality, or else I had a long string of luck in getting earlier-printed shelf stock. The copy of Gross & Tucker I got was printed in 2013, and another title I got that was even worse than this was from 2015. Prices are jumping up, too, though this particular title is still reasonable as I write. It's worrying to think that Dovers could soon be bad value, thanks to corporate "efficiency," i.e. greed.

This book is written at a graduate level. It is written, for the most part, clearly and methodically. There are about 300 problems throughout the text, but there are no solutions in this book for those problems.

A recognized Classical text

This book had much that I needed to know about graph theory.

It is well written and includes much of the information needed.

It has three problems in notation that bother me:

1) Bn for Bouquets is like the Bn used for Braid groups.

2) definitions of "stars" are more the classical star than

the current usage as central point with radial connections.

3)The book doesn't distinguish well enough

between "graphs" with are symmetrical adjacency matrices

and "digraphs" and ends up confusing the issue it should clarify.

The book also shorts the reader on matrix theory connected to the graphs.

It tends to use an older approach to graphs that has to be adapted to modern computer mathematical systems.

Edward J. He has been a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Michigan State University since 1985, and currently holds the rank of professor. Beforehand, he worked for Raytheon Co., Waltham, Massachusetts, USA and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lincoln Laboratory, Lexington, USA. Dr. Rothwell previously coauthored a book on electromagnetics and has published numerous journal articles on related subjects. He is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi, and URSI Commission B, and is an IEEE fellow.

Michael J. Cloud received his BS, MS, and Ph.D in electrical engineering from Michigan State University, East Lansing, USA. Since 1987, he has been a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Lawrence Technological University, Southfield, Michigan, USA. He currently holds the rank of associate professor. Dr. Cloud has coauthored 11 other books, primarily in the field of engineering mathematics. He is a senior member of the IEEE.

What a great little primer for the engineering student who has to write a term paper to be graded by an engineering professor!

I liked this book a lot. Didn't love it, but it gets the 5 star nod just the same. I majored in accounting in college, and as a result I didn't have to do much reading. Most of my accounting courses required me to outline textbook chapters and regurgitate the contents of those chapters on my exam papers. Didn't have to write too many papers. My roommate in college was an engineering major (civil). He was in the same boat as me – he didn't read much nor write much. He had to regurgitate his textbooks on exams, too. As a result, neither of us were very good writers. Practice makes perfect, and we were not required to write much, so we didn't get much practice.

While reading the instant book being reviewed I learned the authors are college professors who teach wanta-be engineers what they need to know to be allowed to join the profession. And I'm sure these two professors have had to slap more than a few of their honor students with a poor letter grade when reading their undergraduate term papers and doctoral dissertations. I'm equally sure that instead of having to sit down with future students who fail their writing assignments and give them the sad news that they lack the skill and ability to write well, they decided to write this book and require their students to read and study it before tackling their grand writing assignments. I'm sure if an honors engineering student gets, reads, and studies the instant book before taking on his or her big papers in school, then he or she will do very well on those assignments.

The book is short. It is clear, and it is concise. It assumes the readers are familiar with the Standard Engineering Design Process, because if you're not, then you won't have a base problem solving structure to adapt when creating your own writing process. It takes skill to write well, and you don't develop a writing ability overnight. Read this book, practice, practice, and practice some more, and the skill will come. Murky thinking leads to murky writing, and a low grade. Clear thinking leads to clear writing and a good grade.

Each chapter has a recap or summary at the end. And the book can probably be used as a writing course textbook at an engineering school since each chapter has exercises that can be assigned as homework, too. To get through the book the quickest way I'd recommend reading the recaps first to get a feel of the book. Then go back and read it from cover to cover excluding the exercises. 5 stars!

Intended as a textbook for writing in the engineering field

In my work life, I am an experimental physicist and work closely with professional engineering resources. I never had a formal class on technical writing, but over the years have had to spend a lot of time and effort writing up physics results both for scientific papers and internal documents, proposal writing, and documenting the experimental hardware we've built. This looks like a good textbook for the class that I never took, but that would have covered these topics. I did a quick glance at a couple of engineering programs and didn't see such a class that was required, but did see optional engineering writing classes. Success in practical engineering does go along with a sensibly good writing skill, otherwise your work is little seen or referenced. Highly recommended for students, and not a bad reference source either for the rest of us.

Seems tailored for students, but I know a few professionals who could use this...

This book is tailored towards writing formal technical documents like graduate thesis and journal articles. It's approach is to apply an engineering mentality to the writing process.

I've worked professionally as an engineer for over 18 years. Overall, I found the writing and descriptions pretty easy to follow, and the rationale behind the approaches were good. The examples and overall tone make me think that this is better suited for graduate students looking to write their thesis, or engineers/scientists wanting to publish a journal article. For someone like me that writes perhaps less "formal" documents, a lot of the examples don't really hit home. The authors do make it clear at the beginning that this isn't intended for "everyday" engineering documents and presentations.

That said, they do drive home several great concepts that apply to pretty much any article/presentation, such as "know your audience." For over $40, though, this might not be the book to get for those kinds of concepts. You'd really get this for the overall engineering slant on writing a formal engineering document. In that context, it isn't the book for me, but it might be good for students or engineers who are struggling with their documents. I know a few people who like to do "data dumps" and call them reports, and this book might help them create documents that other people would find useful.

I recently reviewed a book entitled "A Scientific Approach to Writing for Engineers and Scientists." The titles of the two books would imply that they take similar approaches, but I find that book to be more geared towards my engineering activities and a little easier to read. The two books are similar prices at about $40, and I'd give that one my recommendation.

Overall, this is a pretty good book and approach to writing for engineers. I did like it, but I just like the other book better.

Out dated literature

I purchased this book for my computerized med office class at school. I found it very hard to follow and very hard to concentrate in the activities in the book. I felt chapter questions where vague and not applicable to the information covered in the chapter. I consider myself to be an education person; I graduated with a 4.0 GPA and finished the program early. This may have been a good book in its day, but technology has changed so much, it has basically rendered the book useless in my eyes.

Excelllent/Love IT!!!!!!

Textbook is excellent and just what I needed for my billing class as well as the medical receptionist class. I also love that it is spiraled and the software that comes with it. It takes you through your paces and with all of the additional practice on the cd, website, and workbook, you will be able to learn so much such as how to check in a patient, applying billing and coding, etc. Great textbook and I am keeping it as a reference tool for a long while.

Not for SQL beginners or designers

They should really put in the sales description which people this book is for.....I found that after reading the first few chapters where they blatantly tell you this isn't really for beginners.

Good if you're looking for a programming guide for writing procedures, etc.; not really for ad-hoc query writing.

It's not that it's a "bad" book, but it isn't what I would expect from a "for Dummies" book. I was looking for something that would help me writing ad-hoc queries using SQL Developer for quick data analysis. Unfortunately, it's more a book for writing procedures, etc. While I don't dispute it's useful for that, b/c of the procedure focus, it doesn't have a lot of information specific to individual commands. I've been able to ferret out some information, but it's an effort to find what I'm looking for. Oh well. I'll probably stick to "trial & error" in most cases.

Excellent coverage of the basics of chart design

Stephen Few has a rare talent for explaining apparently opaque concepts in simple terms, but without simplifying the subject. This book starts from the *very* beginning and provides the reader with a solid understanding of the basics of chart design, including when to use a table vs a graph, what types of tables and graphs to use for what kinds of data, and why certain graphical features are more effective than others. Throughout, Few maintains a plain, readable writing style that is never patronizing even when spelling out seemingly obvious points (e.g., use a table if you need to look up a specific value). His patient tone and simple presentation end up guiding you through some unexpectedly sophisticated waters of design almost without your even realizing you've gone anywhere.

In addition to the design coverage, Few covers some (very) basic statisics, how to adjust for inflation, rgb values of a nice selection of colors to use in graphs, how to make box graphs in Excel, and many other workaday details that make the book immediately useful. Most of the charts in the book are made in Excel, showing that you don't need advanced design software to make attractive, clear charts.

The book itself is a beautiful large hardback. This is the source of my one complaint: its large size makes it somewhat difficult to just pop off the shelf and flip through to find something.

If you want to learn how to design good tables and graphs, get it.

This is an excellent book.

This book is well written. From the introduction to the closing chapter. I've not completed all the readings, but his other book is consistent. It is a great book. Show me the Numbers is a basic understanding of graphs and how to present them. It's not about the latest trends. It's about showing you what works and how to present that information. In a well thought out manner using information that attracts the brain to pull data from charts, graphs, and tables. And if you think you can write a better book, please do! And invite me to read it. Otherwise, Stephen Few has solid books available on the market. That not only go into the designing elements, but also the psychological side of things and what attracts the readers brain to understanding. It's worth the price.

UPDATE: This book has dropped in price. I purchased it when it was valued at the $48 mark. Now, it's even cheaper. I'm not even complaining about missing out on the lower price. It was a deal then; and now, it's a steal.

Great visualization advice, patiently explained

Show Me the Numbers: Designing Tables and Graphs to Enlighten by Stephen Few- now in its second edition- is filled with 371 pages of analytical goodness. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that I don't own the first edition of Show Me the Numbers: Designing Tables and Graphs to Enlighten, which was published in 2004. But I didn't really know who Stephen Few was until I started working with Xcelsius and somebody turned me onto his outstanding dashboards book, which was also recently revised into a second edition.

While the dashboards book, Information Dashboard Design: Displaying Data for At-a-Glance Monitoring, is focused on at-a-glance dashboards, Show Me the Numbers is more broadly focused and goes into extreme depth on both table and graph design. Like the dashboards book, Show Me the Numbers begins by laying a foundation with the science on how our brains perceive visual information, then builds its design principles on that foundation. Mr. Few is widely cited (or disparaged) as "the cranky guy that hates pie charts". But his criticism of pie charts (and other poor visualization practices) is grounded in the science of visual perception, not his personal taste in visualizations.

A 371-page book may sound kind of scary, but it is broken down into fourteen chapters that can be easily digested. Mr. Few's writing style is clear and easy to understand, although if you're like me you'll put the book down at the end of each chapter so you can think. The book is tool agnostic, so even if your primary tool is Microsoft Excel you'll benefit from reading it.

The book is rather large, but it's beautifully designed and constructed with lots of clear illustrations. If I traveled more, I'd probably prefer Kindle edition for portability, but it doesn't exist. Mr. Few's reading style lends itself to a comfortable reading chair and a cup of coffee, so I'm quite satisfied with the print edition. I am finding in my day-to-day work that I am slowly internalizing the wisdom of Show Me the Numbers. But it's still a book that I open while in the middle of a project and one that I'll take the time to read cover-to-cover again.
