About the Author

Elayn Martin-Gay has taught mathematics at the University of New Orleans for more than 25 years. Her numerous teaching awards include the local University Alumni Association’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and Outstanding Developmental Educator at University of New Orleans, presented by the Louisiana Association of Developmental Educators.

Prior to writing textbooks, Elayn Martin-Gay developed an acclaimed series of lecture videos to support developmental mathematics students. Wonderful book for all learning styles!

This book breaks down the basics in a great step-by-step approach; allowing the student to gain a solid foundation of concepts and methods. It explains concepts so clearly, that if you miss a lecture, you will be able to study from this book and fully grasp the material you missed. This is coming from someone who 1) has notoriously struggled with math, and 2) does not generally learn well from reading (I'm more of a multi-media and lecture learning style). These things being stated, this book gets an A+!

Greek Love is the first literary, historical, psychological and sociological study of boy-love ever to appear.

Up to now, specialists in sexology have been either too confused to say anything of relevance, or too scared to commit it to print! Such authorities as Stekel, Krafft-Ebing, Bergler, George W. Henry, Ulrichs, Carpenter, Havelock Ellis, and Freud managed to write volumes about other sexual practices, but they betrayed no real understanding of what makes a man love a boy.

The author of Greek Love believes that boy-love is a potential social force for good. In Ancient Greece, it was closely bound up with the highest ethical and philosophical ideals. Therefore, we must seriously consider the possibility that boy-love can be a force for good right now, in our own country.

Greek Love is refreshing to read. The author does not affect the modern pseudo-objectivity that is so often a coverup for moral vacillation. Though he treats the subject fairly, he makes no attempt to conceal his pro-sexual orientation.

In 1764, Cesare Beccaria published the epoch-making treatise Dei delitti e delle pene, which marked the beginning of the movement to reform the medieval penal codes with their savage penalties for sexual offenses.

In 1864, Karl Heinrich Ulrichs published the first of his pamphlets on androphile homosexuality, calling for the recognition of the legal and social rights of a biological minority of the population which religious intolerance had doomed to outlawry and infamy.

In 1914, Magnus Hirschfeld, the greatest authority on homosexuality in the first third of the twentieth century, published Die Homosexualitat des Mannes und des Weibes, in which he argued that attraction to one’s own sex was a congenital and unmodifiable anomaly, a "third sex" occurring as a natural variety of the human species.

In 1964, as the culmination of two hundred years of inquiry and discussion of one of the most complex subjects that have ever baffled the human mind, J. Z.Eglinton published Greek Love, a work destined to clarify the problems of homosexuality and bisexuality by forthrightly repudiating the tendentious assertions of polemicists and apologists and establishing the true character of homosexual relationships within the framework of an orthopsychology and sociology of sexual behavior.

Greek Love – one of the classic treatises in behavioral science – belongs in the library of everyone whose research, teaching, medical or social welfare practice brings him into contact with the sexual problems of modern life, and who is seeking guidance in the interpretation and direction of human sexuality in all its manifold aspects.

A brilliant madman.

J.Z. Eglinton, also known as Walter H. Breen, coauthored "Greek Love" with my mother, Marion Zimmer Bradley. He felt deeply of the rightness of his position, and used arguments from the book to try to convince the judge at his two trials for child molesting. A few of Marion Bradley's books have pedophilic themes; among them "The Catch Trap" and it is interesting to read her works with awareness of her involvement in these issues. It is sad that Walter Breen was so unaware of the pain he caused to his many victims. He was afflicted with paranoid schizophrenia which meant he had a fixed system of delusions which were unresponsive to conflicting data (like the objections of his child-victims!!) When he was sentenced to thirteen years in San Quentin, for the forcible rape of a seven-year-old child, among other charges, he had already been diagnosed with terminal cancer and given only a month to live. He was considered too dangerous to even be allowed into a hospice to die! He was so charismatic in life that his friends were widely in favor of finding a way to discredit his victims, and many were loyal to him to the end, even the ones who knew the truth about his crimes.

Brilliant for the novice photographer!

This is the 2nd copy I have bought of this book, my original one I lent out and do not know where it has gone.
As a beginner to photography at the time I found this book a brilliant starting point for a budding photographer with no prior experience. The book is a good balance of technical and non-technical information, with a focus more on how to make your photos pleasing and expressing your own tastes then on how to take a technically correct photo.
Although it would not be so helpful to the experienced or intermediate photographer it is a good starting point for those that want something simple and easy to read, with good illustration of techniques and still want to know a bit more detail behind how it all works without being bored to death.

I just love this book! It is quite easy to understand but not in a way you feel it's being pedantic. It gets to the point quickly and is very well layed out and displayed. I haven't finished it yet but I do love the tasks that get me to focus and put in to practice what is being taught.

The story is set in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood at the University of Chicago's Lab School, where Balliett was a teacher. There, outsiders Petra and Calder become friends as they try to find out what happened to a missing Vermeer painting. That's really all the plot one needs to know. More important are Balliett's purpose in writing and the way she has structured her story. The former seems to be to get to children to think--about relationships, connections, coincidences, and the subtle language of artwork. To accomplish this, she peppers her story with seemingly random events that eventually come together in a startling, delightful pattern. The novel isn't perfect. It glides over a few nitty-gritty details (how did the thief nab the picture), and occasionally the coincidences seem more silly than serendipitous. However, these are quibbles for a book that offers children something new upon each reading. Adults who understand the links between children's reading and their developing minds and imaginations will see this as special, too. Helquist, who has illustrated the Lemony Snickett books, outdoes himself here, providing an interactive mystery in his pictures. Ilene Cooper

Fun adventure but buy paper book not e-book

I loved Petra and Calder and their adventures! But I didn't like was trying to read this book in kindle format. So annoying! I couldn't decipher the code without either recopying it (which I couldn't; because I was wedged in an airplane seat and couldn't reach my notebook/pen) or flipping back and forth between the key page which was hard to find. I ended up not even trying to decipher the last letter. Also it was hard to see the pictures on the kindle but perhaps useful because I could enlarge them. Some of the other graphic details like chapter headings also did not work on well on the kindle (at least with the black background). I know my 11yo son would have no patience for reading this on kindle because of those issues so I will have to check out paper copy from library.

Plot-wise it wasn't super tight but I enjoyed the characters enough to overlook all that!

An Excellent Asset!

This is the third time I've used the Novel-Ties Study Guides, and it certainly won't be the last. The guide gently, but thoroughly, urges the student to probe into the deeper topics of the accompanying books. There are vocabulary pages, comprehension questions, discussion questions, and short essay questions. Throughout, there are prompts for the student to peel back the layers of meaning in the novel. The pages are perforated, so the guides can be used as consumable items, but they can be used for small groups, as well.

One of my all-time favourite books as a child

One of my all-time favourite books as a child! Recently bought to read again after spending hours in front of Vermeer's A Lady Writing and was not disappointed. This is one of the most fascinating reads I've ever been through, through the coincidences and the puzzles and the mystery, and I could read it over and over again and never get tired. If you're someone who likes a good challenge to wrap your brain around, a whole lot of suspense, and well-written characters, absolutely go for this book. It's an incredible ride.

This might be a great buy if you know how to read schematics. There is nothing easy about following the "step-by-step" format of this book. It had some great items to make, but if you can't understand the instructions it's no help. For that reason I rate it low.

Wonderful book

I bought this book for my 14 year old son who has done origami for the past three years, he found the instructions very clear, and was delighted with both the variety of shapes that were given, and how easy it was to modify the shapes to create different designs.
