Outstanding Read

Karla Gottlieb has done us all a service by carefully researching Queen Nanny, often an obscure figure in history. The fact that this woman warrior, Queen Nanny, outthought, outwitted, and outfoxed the heavily militaristic Spanish and British males who desired her death is amazing. This female resistance leader is one who should be known by all interested in the truth of history.

The Mother of Us All. A History of Queen Nanny

This is a small book, 119 pages, that cuts a big swath. It is about an interesting period and a lively woman of the early 18th Century, someone who never made it into any of my history books. I certainly know about her now. Gottlieb pulls together threads from many sources into one rich fabric. This is a progressive book about colonialism, racism, feminism, about military srategy, about the West-African-rooted religious traditions and the use of supernatural powers that made their way into the Maroon Culture. Gottlieb obviously has great respect for her subject -- this remarkable woman, Nanny, part historical figure, part legend -- who represents a courageous struggle against oppression. The book is well-researched, illustrated, and spirited reading. Some of the historical documents can be bypassed if not interested. One is impressed with its relevance to the very same "isms" that continue to torment us in the 21st century.

An Astonishing Read

This is such an important book, a challenging book, so well researched and accessible. I'm ashamed to say I had never heard of Queen Nanny until I started to research the topic of slave resistance and rebellion for my book group when we read 'The Long Song' and 'Wide Sargasso Sea'.
Reading this has been an eye opener for me, well done to the writer for embarking on this research, Queen Nanny deserves a bigger place in history.

My name is John McKay, I’ve been the owner of Suitcase Recordings since 2004, and launched Mixoff.org in 2011. I’ve been mixing and recording most of my life, though I’ve never had a big hit. I’m like most of you, working with self-funded bands, small indie labels, etc. The good news is, there are more and more bands recording themselves, who need a pro mix if they have any hope of getting interest in their music!

I decided to write this book to help out some of the very talented mixers I’ve known in recent years, who seem to be having a hard time finding great clients, and getting paid what they’re worth.

The ideas in the book are from my own experience, and from things my friends have done, and a few things I’ve observed the big name mixers do, as well.

The book outlines a simple plan for focusing your mixing business (I recommend choosing a genre and focusing all of your efforts there,) along with all the little things you need to do to create a great show reel, contact bands, build relationships and so on.

You’ll learn where to find new clients, and how to set your rates, along with info about best practices for billing, what to include and not include on your website, and more.

The business side of mixing noone talks about.

This book is really interesting to read because it's inspiring and straight to the point.
It's well structured and feeds you many ideas on how to improve your business side of mixing.
It's not a book about mixing itself but rather how to monetize your skills, find new clients and how to structure your business.
I especially liked the ideas of implementing certain routines into your daily workflow and the step by step guide to a good online presence.

Thanks John for a really valuable advices. The book is easy to read, straight to the point and contains a lot of details you've been neglecting as an engineer or a producer.
The book helped to improve my mixing website dramatically and find new leads to potential customers.
Engineers do not know business very well - so this is a very important piece of advice.

Helpful book that gets you going right away!

This is a well written book with a lot of straightforward helpful advice. There are definitely some ideas in there for building up a client base I had not really thought of. Also has solid advice on putting together a web site and how to get a demo reel going that was helpful to me. I'd definitely recommend reading this book.
