In Dubious Battle Relevant Today.

I love historical novels from 1900 to 1930. In Dubious Battle moves slower slowly than Steinbeck's other books and I get impatient reading this. Character development is not as rich as in Cannery Road and it doesn't have the pathos of The Grapes of Wrath. It is the subject, the plot that keeps me reading. The brutality of capitalist land owners imposing low wages and long work hours, while discouraging union organization by brutal force. Here, Steinbeck is in the same plane as Upton Sinclair, another of my favorite writers.
The book is relevant today because of the struggles of working people during an 8-year wage stagnation of today. Unions, once powerful are now flaccid and the working class is on the cusp of an uprising. As a member of the work force for 50 years I know about the abuses employers heap on their work force, which is trapped in low- paying dead-end jobs.
In summary this is a fine book.

I don't know how anyone could not rate this novel 'five stars' and I might add five diamonds. In Dubious Battle is as important today as it was 40 years ago. The message is that no matter what one does, the cards are stacked against the working poor. The owners back pocket get fatter; law enforcement is either blind or non existing; and the community at large is too timid to take a stand. An absolute must read. Thank you Steinbeck for having compassion and understanding and being able to share it.
