Ira Shor has done it again! For teachers of English, Shor presents a real life example of his teaching methods and practices. If motivating students (and teachers) is your goal, then don't miss this book. Affecting real change in a college classtoom is Shor's goal, and he presents an honest and realistic picture of what happens when the students are given the power to make their own way in a classroom. Funny, inspiring, honest, and a real source of pleasure for me! Any college writing instructor will find this a satisfying read! Save it for the long hot summer and change your Fall classroom. Trust me

When Students Have Power: Negotiating Authority in a Critical PedagogyThrough telling his personal stories of frustration and growth, Shor encourages teachers to challenge themselves to change the dynamics of power in the classroom and, as a result, engage resistant students. Because of this book, I began negotiating assignments with my own resistant learners and enjoyed seeing them more engaged. A great read for teachers who don't want to just "do school" to their students.

The entire notion of sharing power (or authority) with students is shaped by relationships of power/authority throughout the entire culture. Why should education be any different or special? Student writing - in order to me meaningful - must be centered on what is relevant to the student/writer. It must "mean" something to him/her. Subject matter must be compelling to the student/writer. What could be more compelling to students that the cultural and political structure inside which they live and work?

A Terrific Pocket Guide to Better Management

The first work place experience for the majority of people was the old command and control style of management. Unfortunately as we move up the managerial ladder, we tend to follow the examples we have been exposed to. What worked a few years back no longer works. With the work population shifting more to knowledge workers, the techniques and tactics which worked in the past are no longer working. To get the most out of today's worker, managers must be more coaches and less drill sergeants. Unfortunately most managers have no training in what coaching is or how to utilize coaching with direct reports.

Coaching People provides a very useful resource for any manager who wants to do a better job of managing their direct reports - helping them learn and develop into better employees and individuals. Coaching will also help the coachees reach their goals.

Coaching People is a book in the Pocket Mentor series published by Harvard Business School Press. The idea behind the Pocket Mentor series is to give the basic information in a short, easy to understand book which can be carried around in your pocket. This book certainly accomplishes that goal. It is short and can be read in about an hour.

The book covers all the basics necessary to allow you to effectively coach any employee or for that matter anyone in your circle who wants coaching. The author starts by defining what coaching is and what it is not. Then there are some very good coaching tips and approaches. One that is highly valuable is to separate what you feel/believe from your actual observations. Far too often we act on feeling and beliefs and not on the reality of what we have observed.

There are chapters on: How to develop coaching skills, How to manage a coaching session and How to customize your coaching. One of the more valuable resources in the list of questions you can use in your coaching and to evaluate your effectiveness.

While the book is short, it is full of great information. For those not schooled in coaching, you will probably need to read the book a couple of times and then write out some specific tips and tools you can use. This is an extremely good resource as an introduction to coaching. Even if you think you are a fairly good coach, I would highly recommend this book. Read it as a refresher course, keep it handy and refer to it often. It is too easy to fall into poor habits. This book will serve as a very useful reminder on the basics of good, effective coaching.

As a manager you can use the concepts in this book to transform yourself from a manager to a leader.

A lot of common sense

This little book is contains general explanations on the basics of coaching. It includes several useful checklists that will allow even people with experience in coaching to work more systematically.

The book is easy to read. As such it is to recommend to people who are completely new to coaching or who want to change their management style towards a less directive one.

My impression is that people who have a certain sensibility on how to work with people and how to give guidance - as it was the case for myself - will find a "common sense" described in this book and not that much that is new. The book nevertheless helped me to improve the way I interact with others.

About the Author

The author of five books, including her critically acclaimed memoir, If the Spirit Moves You, and the novel Daphne, Justine Picardie is the former features director of British Vogue and editor of the Observer magazine. She is a fashion columnist for the Sunday Telegraph and writes for several other publications, including Harper’s Bazaar and the Times of London. She lives in London with her two sons.

La petite mademoiselle who started a revolution

In this elegant book Justine Picardie writes about the life and character of Coco Chanel. Chanel liberated women from the constrains of the corset and introduced more practical women's clothing (boyish sportswear, suits, and unisex pants) in the early twentieth century. However, it was the Little Black Dress that was her most groundbreaking fashion statement when it first made an appearance in 1926.

As a Russian, I was surprised by the amount of Russians in Chanel's life, including the nephew of the last Tsar, the Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich Romanov. They were lovers for several years. It was the Grand Duke who introduced her to the former perfumer to the Tsars and former Russian subject called Ernest Beaux (a truly remarkable German-French-Russian character) who fled from Russia to France after the Revolution. He created the famous scent of Chanel #5 in 1921. I learned that there are some speculations that Chanel was a German spy or perhaps a double agent during WWII working for the British. She knew Winston Churchill personally and was a lover of the Duke of Westminster.

Chanel was a driven woman, who at first used fashion to make her way onto the Parisian high society, or even to attract the aristocratic men. But nothing functions as a means unless we engage in it as an end. The book would have benefited from the overview of fashion industry and the role of the House of Chanel in it. What are the main driving forces, who are the main competitors? The book is smartly divided into small portions; each chapter is short and logical. The illustrations are luscious. This is a well-researched study - the author seems to have dipped into every possible source, from the records of Paris police to the Churchill archives. I recommend it.

This book attempts the apparently impossible: to make sense of Coco Chanel. Unfortunately, the author jumps around in time, a modern conceit I guess, but for this already confusing situation a chronological progression might have helped. Not a good read.

I bought the book for my mother who is a big Coco Chanel fan. She mentioned that it was poorly written and simply uninteresting. She stated that she was very disappointed with the book.

Dry rendering of a great human story

The Bengal Renaissance was a great flowering of vivid and socially insightful humanism, which occurred mostly in Calcutta following governor William Hastings' completion of the New Fort William in 1773. Over the next 100 years, Calcutta (and Bengal) became a center of art, literature, philosophy and science that firmly established it as India's cultural (as well as political) capital.

In many ways, this story mirrors a similar one written in St. Petersburg, Russia during the same period. Yet, for some reason, the great Russian cultural awakening of the 18th and 19th centuries is well known to us, but the equally important Bengali development is not.

Much of this problem is due to the existing historical literature dedicated to the two topics. The Russian cultural renaissance, brought about by the cultural mingling of European and Russian peoples in St. Petersburg, is most often told as a great human story, a story of people trying to reconcile a "backward" past with an inevitably modern future. The Russian story is mostly told about the people, and the great works of human expression they produced.

An analagous social movement occurred in Bengal - primarily in Calcutta - driven by the juxtaposition of English institutions and sensibilities onto an intellectually restless local population. The problem is, it's rarely told that way. More often than not, Indian historians reduce the Bengal Renaissance down to the founding of Anglo-Indian academic institutions and the accomplishments of their respective Western-educated alumni, sometimes listed almost like a CV.

This book is no exception. Dr. Dasgupta does not deviate from this formula. He presents us with the minutae of the founding and function of this college and that college, but fails substantially in presenting this intellectual movement in broader humanistic, political and economic contexts. So, I know where and what all the Tagores studied in Calcutta, but I can't tell you, after reading this book, why it's important to human society. The author goes so far as to suggest that each of the great thinkers in Bengal who contributed to the Renaissance was simply a product of his or her formal education (re: pg. 203). I would suggest that it's rather more than that. The childhood biographies are nice, but we know where they all lead; to the college in Calcutta.

So, if you like your cultural history told essentially as the history of academic institutions and societies, you may like this book.

The author's writing style is clear enough, but he makes a dry thesis even drier by writing most of the narrative in a stilted, Victorian passive voice. Institutions "were founded" and literature "was written," etc... Well, we know that much. The important part is WHO did all this founding and writing, and WHY does it matter.

In summary, this book presents a great human story told in a most inanimate, unengaging way. There are better books on this subject. I recommend the various history monographs by Lakshmi Subramanian and Nitish Sengupta.

This book gives us narratives on making of religious, social and cultural reform movements in undivided Bengal province of the British India during the 19th and 20th centuries. These awakening movements subsequently helped in spreading of Swadeshi ideas and freedom struggles across the sub-continent. It is really engaging while reading this book.

At dawn on January 23, 1870, four hundred men of the Second U.S. Cavalry attacked and butchered a Piegan camp near the Marias River in Montana in one of the worst slaughters of Indians by American military forces in U.S. history. The Powerful Blackfeet's Challenge with White Assimilation and Violence told Through the Clarke Family

Excellent Description of Early Relations between the Blackfeet and white Traders and the challenges their off spring had in integrating in white society and a description of the Marias Massacre that was revenge for the actions of not only a few but a completely different band. The author utilizes the Malcolm Clarke family as the framework for this story of the virtual destruction of the Blackfeet due to white migration, disease (small pox), encroaching treaties, the Dawes act that forces allotment and missionaries that well meaning or not take their children to schools that attempts to negate their heritage. The book is virtually two parts, first about the early pioneer Malcolm, expelled from West Point for his violent temper, goes up the Missouri to become an accomplished trader and marries into the Blackfeet and unlike many other mountain men or traders stays with his family and raises his children to late suffer a violent death resulting in the massacre. The second half of the book focuses on two of his off spring, Horace who was present at the massacre and Helen who had a stage and later a challenging career in the bureau of Indian Affairs and their nephew John Clarke who was a remarkable artist. The descendants live on a fine line between native and whites and tend to lean closer to their native roots exemplifying the challenge of integrating into white society that became more elitist as the demographics of the population changed. This focus on the Blackfeet exemplifies the change in a powerful culture that today only a small minority of the tribe is considered pure blood but still struggles economically. Inclusive in all this is a tragedy and an indictment of the military action not only led poorly and wrong but an attempt was made to justify this lesser known massacre.

Unforgettable tale of star-crossed lives and events.

This book is historical writing at its best. A tale of a family of the American West, a Blackfoot mother and a West Point-drop out father, whose lives astound us as they helped shape the military, political,even cultural and artistic history of our nation. Beginning with chance encounters with the 1806 Lewis and Clark Expedition in present day Montana, and ranging to the Texas Revolution in 1837, ongoing intrigues in Washington DC, Shakespeare in the theatre district of 1913 New York, and the Rockefeller family in Glacier National Park, this intricately researched, gracefully written work engages its readers in an unforgettable tale of star crossed lives and events.
