Review
"Unfailingly lively . . . a masterpiece . . Few books, in fact, dramatize as engagingly as Confessions the collective flaws that still dog Italian public life today"
--Tim Parks, New York Review of Books
"Asprawling story of love, valor, and theRisorgimento . . . The first complete version of Nievo’s book in English was published just this year, in a wonderful translation by Frederika Randall."
--Elizabeth Kolbert, The New Yorker (Best Books of 2014)
"Of all the furore that came out of the Risorgimento, only Manzoni and Nievo really matter today"
--Umberto Eco
"The one 19th century Italian novel which has [for an Italian reader] that charm and fascination so abundant in foreign literatures"
-- Italo Calvino
"Perhaps the greatest Italian novel of the nineteenth century"
--Roberto Carnero
‘A wonderful blend of wit, political perspicuity and exuberant comic invention,The Confessions of an Italianhas been called the great novel of the Risorgimento...Frederika Randall’s admirable new translation now makes it available in all its sprawling, teasing, snook-cocking glory...This is a humane piece of fiction, funny and wise, but it is also a candid, astute account of what it feels like to combine lofty patriotic illusions about a People, with a realistic view of how ignoble and mistaken people generally are.’
--Lucy Hughes-Hallett,Times Literary Supplement

A must read in a new English translation for any lover of Italy
By Dianne Bennett
this "literary masterpiece" of Italy's Risorgimento - its 19th century movement for unification and independence is now that it's in English a must read for anyone who wants to understand Italy - historically and today. I started this 800+ page picaresque novel not planning to finish it. I'd sample it, I thought. But I couldn't put it down. Young Nievo, writing as Carlo Altoviti, a near-death old man, starts with his character's lowly beginnings as a Cinderella-type orphan, whose task is to turn the spit in the kitchen. But Carlo ends up participating in virtually every aspect of the tumultuous saga of Italy's struggle for independence, though dying, like his creator, before that independence comes to pass. That a 30 year-old could write so wisely is astounding, almost as astounding as Randall's magnificent translation (along with the helpful chronology and her thumbnail cast of characters) that makes this 19th century wordy (yes, but delightfully so) author so readable. If you think I Promessi Sposi is THE Italian novel of the 19th century, think again, and read Confessions of an Italian.

A Great and Unduly Neglected Historical Novel
By Donald G. Marshall
This is one of the great historical novels of the 19th century. I can't understand why it doesn't have a reputation up there with Manzoni, Scott, and even Tolstoy. The story focuses on Venice and its possessions on the mainland. The period is from the 1780s through the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars, and the frustrating and abortive efforts of patriotic Italians to liberate and unify their country and achieve basic human freedom. Interlaced with this political saga is the personal story of a poor relative who grew up in a down-at-the-heels aristocratic family and is hopelessly in love with the temperamental and tempestuous second daughter. Their lives intertwine and diverge through a series of episodes that carry the narrator across Italy as he is swept up in the historic events of the period. He and his love realize the depth of their passion for each other, but their relationship is doomed, even as Venice sinks from a Mediterranean and European power to an enfeebled and marginal country, left independent only because no one has any use for it. The style and tone are wonderful--complex, nuanced, subtle, often hilarious, marked by a candid but intelligent irony. It's a long novel, but well worth the time, and effectively translated in this new version.

CONFESSIONS OF AN ITALIAN gives a fine picture of the Italian Risorgimento up to the late ...
By Phillip Parotti
CONFESSIONS OF AN ITALIAN gives a fine picture of the Italian Risorgimento up to the late 1850s, close to the time when the relatively young Nievo was drowned in transit from Sicily to Naples. At more than 850 pages, the novel is lengthy with a discursive style that is less direct than the Italian classic I PROMESSI SPOSI, and one imagines that a modern book editor would have advised cuts. Nevertheless, the book offers a fine picture of Italy and the politics of the period and a rewarding reading for any reader who delves into it.
