About the Author
Morris Hein is professor emeritus of chemistry at Mt. San Antonio College, where he regularly taught the preparatory chemistry course and organic chemistry. Over the years, more than three million students have learned chemistry using a text by Morris Hein. Just like new

Received it on Saturday June 9,2012 order it on June 1,2012 it was just like the seller said, it had no marks in it, and all the pages were there. I know colleges who have purchase use lab book and did not realise pages had been missing from the lab book until it was time to do a lab assignment or marked in. It took longer than expected so I am glad I ordered early.

Cheaper earlier edition, worth the money

My class required the 14th edition of this book, but I ordered the 12th and it has all the same experiments as the 14th except for two, so not a big deal. Definitely a worthy buy. Came in the mail super quick, shipped the same day I placed my order. Superb timing and just as described. Great condition for a used paperback book. Thank you :)

The Translator

There are a number of compelling memoirs by Sudanese authors such as They Poured Fire On Us From The Sky (2005), What Is the What (2006), and at least 4 more by or about "The Lost Boys" of southern Sudan. As the conflict has moved north and west, like birds flying before the storm, we are now seeing a new wave of heartbreaking memoirs arriving from the Darfur region. Each story is as unique as the person telling it, and all offer a glimpse into a world few know about because western journalists have so much difficulty working in the country, thus making this first-hand narrative by a native Darfurian a unique and important source.

As a young man Daoud Hari witnessed the destruction of his idyllic rural village by modern Russian-made helicopter gunships and, like the logs of a raft breaking apart in the rapids, he and his family spun off in many harrowing directions. Hari decided early on that he would "use his brains and not a gun to make a better life" for himself. After arriving at a refugee camp in Chad, his skill at languages allowed him to work as a translator and guide for westerners on fact-finding trips across the border into Darfur. On about his 7th trip in August 2006 he became embroiled in an international incident with kidnapped National Geographic journalist Paul Salopek, making headlines around the world. Through the help of friends Hari was able to get out of Sudanese jail and move to the United States, where he now works for SaveDarfur.Org

Hari's easy to read book is an excellent entry point for learning about the Darfur conflict. A nine-page Appendix called "A Darfur Primer" is, the author says, what any Darfurian in a bar would know about their own history. Hari's book contains the most complete version yet of Pulitzer-Prize winning Paul Salopek's 2006 harrowing kidnapping ordeal, taking up nearly the last third of the book; Salopek has not yet published an account, he was severely beaten and almost died (a fate nearly shared by Hari). Hari tells us about the unintended consequences of the Iraq War, saying "Torture was the popular new thing because Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib were everywhere in the news at that time, and crazy men like this were now getting permission to be crazy." Finally, Hari is perhaps most remarkable for never loosing his humanity despite the horror around him, reminding the reader "loosing a baby is hard. It doesn't matter where in the world you live for that." This is a wonderful memoir, intelligent, thrilling, educational, recommend highly.

Simple... powerful.. life changing...

I was hesitant to purchase this book because the writing seemed very simple as I skimmed the book in the bookstore; however, it is this simple prose that empowers the journey you take with the author. From the opening story of his life being saved by a Journalist to the closing account of the torture and eventual freedom granted to him (don't worry, this doesn't reveal a surprise ending - after all, he did write the book), you feel that you are being told a story in the simple traditional form of an African tribal legend. Sadly, this is no legend!

When I read about the little girl killed by a soldier in a horrific way, I wept. When I read Daoud's commentary on why Darfur marriages last so long (they sleep separately), I laughed. What struck me was how much this man and his family has suffered and, yet, he laughs. He can teach us much about suffering and the ability to continue to believe and hope.

The more important part of the stories, however, is the part that should make us scream for change in the way we have dealt with this genocide and others like it. It's time to take faster action. When we have to wait until there are over 1000 stories to be heard (in order to decide if it is genocide), there's something VERY wrong with our process.

The author makes you feel like you've walked the sandy world in which he grew up. You feel as if you've ridden a camel, pushed a Land Rover out of a ditch, survived a beating and crossed borders illegally for the sake of human life. Why? Because he tells the story in very simple English, which makes you feel your hearing about it all from a child's mind. You connect with the story much as a child envisions she is in a traditional fairy tale. Very powerful!

The author ended his story by saying that he didn't think he stood a one percent chance of being saved from rearrest and possibly being traded back to the government of Sudan, which would likely kill him. Then he said of those odds, "for me, that was pretty good." Indeed, he was able to escape to work outside of the country and, among other things, write this book. I think we have to ask ourselves this: Are we going to give better odds to the people of Darfur and other such nations or are we only going to look at "past" holocausts like World War II and give the lip service "never again"?

Yes. This book has changed me.

A nicely done personal history of a large, sad tale

Unfortunately, the only thing that 99.999% of the world associates with the word "Darfur" is death, hate and tragedy. Daoud Hari's small memoir reminds the reader that Darfur was once home to millions - a place of family, friend, play and work.

That is the strongest asset of this short work - it puts a human face on a large tragedy. Written in simple, elegant English and with a wry sense of humor ("Most people like me, are tall - I am six feet - and are also a little thin because of all the walking, the hard work and the dieting that is one of the many advantages of poverty."[p. 108]), this book is an extension of Hari's way of fighting back against the forces that are destroying Darfur. Rather than taking up arms, Hari decided to expose Darfur to the world by escorting journalists from Chad into Darfur in Sudan.

This was not a choice for the faint of heart. Journalists and their guides were considered to be spies by the government of Sudan. Hari and his journalists were exposed to gunfire, captured multiple times and eventually one group was captured, tortured and eventually released through the efforts of former presidential candidate and New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson.

Before reading the book, I suggest reading "Appendix 1: A Darfur Primer" at the end of the text. It helps give his story some context.

About the Author

Ignacio Tinoco was an undergraduate at the University of New Mexico, a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin, and a postdoctoral fellow at Yale. He then went to the University of California, Berkeley, where he has remained. His research interest has been on the structures of nucleic acids, particularly RNA. He was chairman of the Department of Energy committee that recommended in 1987 a major initiative to sequence the human genome. His present research is on unfolding single RNA molecules by force.

Kenneth Sauer grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and received his A.B. in chemistry from Oberlin College. Following his Ph.D. studies in gas-phase physical chemistry at Harvard, he spent three years teaching at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. A postdoctoral opportunity to learn from Melvin Calvin about photosynthesis in plants led him to the University of California, Berkeley, where he has been since 1960. Teaching general chemistry and biophysical chemistry in the Chemistry Department has complemented research in the Physical Biosciences Division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab involving spectroscopic studies of photosynthetic light reactions and their role in water oxidation. His other activities include reading, renaissance and baroque choral music, canoeing, and exploring the Sierra Nevada with his family and friends.

James C. Wang was on the faculty of the University of California, Berkeley, from 1966 to 1977. He then joined the faculty of Harvard University, where he is presently Mallinckrodt Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. His research focuses on DNA and enzymes that act on DNA, especially a class of enzymes known as DNA topoisomerases. He has taught courses in biophysical chemistry and molecular biology and has published over 200 research articles. He is a member of Academia Sinica, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.

Joseph Puglisi was born and raised in New Jersey. He received his B.A. in chemistry from The Johns Hopkins University in 1984 and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1989. David Rovny ak, a native of Charlottesville, Virginia, earned his B.S. in Chemistry at the University of Richmond and Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.� After performing post-doctoral study at the Harvard Medical School under an NIH-NRSA fellowship, he joined Bucknell University where he has been recognized with the Bucknell Presidential Teaching Award for Excellence.� His research focuses on new methods for NMR spectroscopy and physico-chemical behavior of bile acids.

Boring and filled with errors

Its a decent book. It's not an easy read but I guess it really isn't supposed to be. My biggest problem is that there are a number of errors in the supplementary equations and problems at the end of each chapter. However, if you have access to the solutions manual they usually correct and account for these errors. Moreover, from what I have seen, the chapter bodies are generally error free. I would speculate that the supplementary problems/equations were not edited or proofread as rigorously as the chapter content.

Disclaimer: I have only studied chapters 2,3,4 and 6 thus far.

We use this book as our textbook since it is fairly new. However, there are lots of error and typos in the book which makes it confusing. PLEASE make sure there are less errors before publishing next time.

Many typos and multiple questions with incorrect answers made this textbook confusing and frustrating (as if p-chem isn't fun enough already). I can not recommend this textbook.

Great Gift for Anyone Going into Teaching,... For the RIGHT Reasons

After reading this, one could be forgiven for assuming that Horace Mann was a champion of private schools, but in fact he was one of the earliest advocates of tax supported public schools. My, how his dream has tarnished in the more than a century and a half since he wrote this! In far too many cases public school teaching has declined from a calling, to a profession, to a job, to make work for the otherwise unemployable.

Of course there is and hopefully always will be a dedicated core of public school teachers in it for the right reasons. One prays they are still the majority, but one has serious doubts. One way you can contribute to fixing the problem as opposed to just grousing about it is to encourage those with the necessary dedication and purpose and talent to make teaching their career, either in public or private schools, and one way to do that is to give them the gift of inspiration and good advice Horace Mann first gave in 1840, as part of his Fourth Annual Report of the Massachusetts Board of Education, that is every bit as relevant today, arranged topically into four different sections.

The first is entitled herein "Knowledge of Studies". "Teachers should have a perfect knowledge of the rudimental branches which are required by law to be taught in our schools." No keeping one lesson ahead of the class is going to be acceptable to old Horace! Of course the wide increase in knowledge to be imparted today arguably requires a greater degree of specialization than Horace might have been comfortable with, but at the minimum a teacher should know his or her area of expertise backwards and forwards, if only in order to better catch subtle errors before they become ingrained errors.

The second is entitled herein "Aptness to Teach". Not everyone who knows a subject can teach it. Part of the process of deciding whether or not to go into teaching is determining whether one has that aptness or not, and this section will help one to determine this as it argues its necessity.

The third is entitled herein "The Art of Managing a Classroom". Not everyone who knows a subject and possesses an aptness for teaching can manage a classroom, but to a greater extent than is the case with aptness to teach, managing a classroom is something that can be learned and reading this section is a good start.

The last is entitled herein "Molding Good Behavior". Besides making the usual arguments for the importance of molding good behavior as a teacher, this short section offers an intriguing caution about imparting one's own eccentricities to one's students. In our "do your own thing" world this might be the hardest sell of all, but it doesn't hurt to be reminded that children are impressionable and one should always be careful about what one is impressing.

Note: One could complain that this book is available online for free. Well, yes, what part of in the public domain do you not understand? However, trying to get away with giving someone a printout as a gift will earn you the nickname of cheapskate. If all you want to do is read it yourself, then by all means stick to the free sites. However, if you are looking for a way to get through to someone else, you are better off buying a copy, and a solitary sawbuck for this sturdy pocket-sized reprint is going to be tough to beat. The chief virtue of it being online is your ability to read it first and make sure that this is the book you want to give before ordering it.

Grand Master Jhoon Rhee

Grand Master Jhoon Rhee, age 69, is the “father” of Tae Kwon Do in the United States, where there are now 5,000,000 active participants (Korea Herald). Master Rhee has twice been featured in Parade Magazine (circulation 50,000,000) including the cover feature with photo on March 16, 1997. In August 1999 he was awarded the prestigious lifetime achievement award by Martial Arts Professional and described as “a living embodiment of the benefits of the martial arts way of life.” Master Rhee designed and introduced safety gear into martial arts, which is credited with broadening the sport and exercise activity into a mass market appeal. He has been teaching martial arts in the Congressional Gym to Members of the U.S. Congress for 34 years, 3 days a week, and does 1,000 push-ups a day, 500 sit-ups, breathing exercises and a daily fitness program called RheeShape: The Balanced Life Program. He introduced Tae Kwon Do to the former Soviet Union in 1991 and has returned 18 times to teach and promote the sport, oversee the development of Jhoon Rhee Tae Kwon Do Schools, and give motivational speeches. The Jhoon Rhee USO Show entertained U.S. troops in South Korea and visited Japan in the summer 1999, in a manner similar to the Bob Hope USO Shows of the past. Master Rhee travels regularly throughout the U.S., Canada, and the C.I.S., giving seminars to martial arts studio owners and other professionals. He is also an accomplished musician, performing classical music on the harmonica.

Entertaining read.

Jhoon Rhee was a friend of Bruce Lee's. Bruce Lee did more for martial arts in the west than perhaps anyone else. The image of Lee is still recognized almost thirty years after his death. This book covers the time of Lee and Rhee friendship and a the short time afterwards. One is not going to learn any big secrets about either but will learn more about the human side of both. It is a quick and easy read. I am not sure why this book has such a huge price on it as it is still in print. You can find it through the TKD Times website and buy it for about $20.oo. A nice collection to either your Bruce Lee or Jhoon Rhee libraries. It has always been obvious that TKD kicks were part of Bruce Lee's study of martial arts.

This mega-module is 130 pages long, 1 page front cover, 2 pages of editorial, 1 page ToC, 1 page SRD, 1 page advertisement, 1 page back cover, leaving us with a total of 123 pages of content, so let's take a look!

This mega-module Kobold-in-Chief Wolfgang Baur was originally released for D&D 4th edition, but I can't comment on that once since I don't have it - I only have the PFRPG-conversion done by ennie-award winning designer Ben McFarland. That being said - I'll break my usual format for adventure-reviews - to pieces. I'm not going to go through this step-by-step - the review would become redundant fast and extremely long to boot. Instead I'll just say one thing:

GET THIS NOW. Seriously. Buy it. Give it as a gift to your DM. If you're a DM, get this NOW. If you, for whatever reason, want to buy only one Kobold Press-adventure - BUY THIS ONE.

You're still here, aren't you? Ok, I guess I have to do better.

First of all, let me address that this book features skill-challenges, i.e. obstacles your combined group can surpass by combinations of skill checks, with each player contributing (hopefully) something to the fray - they are designed in a way where even fighters will have something reasonable to do. Furthermore, above and beyond and a great help for DMs a bit weak on the fluffy roleplaying side, suggestions for the respective argumentations on why the skill in question works/doesn't work are given. Beyond these even, class abilities, spells and feats feature into the respective checks and get covered in a level of detail I've never ever seen in any publication - without bloating the book. And if you don't like skill-checks, you could still use these pieces of information as simple roleplaying guidelines. The same holds btw. true for incantations, which, while a part of the module, do not occupy a crucial role and can be abstracted rather easily. Ben McFarland has done an astounding job of translating the module into the context of Pathfinder-rules. It should also be noted that the module is relatively light on Midgard-specific fluff, i.e. it can be transported to Golarion or any other world you choose with minimum hassle - you just have to switch out cosmetic terms like "Zobeck" for another big city name and there you go.

And that's about it regarding the formal qualities of the crunch - next up follows a VERY BRIEF synopsis of what you can expect - and thus from here on out reign the SPOILERS. Players, do yourself a favor and jump to the conclusion. You don't want this one spoiled, believe me. I'd actually love to play this, but having read it, that is out of the question.

All right, we kick off when Zobeck (or another big city of your choosing) experiences a swift occupation: One day, everyone wakes up and finds that the shadow fey now run the town - and who violates their capricious decrees has to contend with their harsh, humiliating repressing punishments. Turns out after some research and diplomacy with the envoy of the sc�thesidhe (shadow fey) and some reading between the lines, that an obscure deal between the former ruling family and the shadow fey has expired and that they now consider the city their domain - with an almost unstoppable Statthalter on the way.

In order to reclaim mortal sovereignty over the city, the PCs have to research a ritual to send them off on the perilous journey towards the home of the shadow fey - and should they survive this journey into the very heart of shadow, they'll be surprised: The Sc�thesidhe have made elitism a form of art and at first, the courts seem empty - those of too low status actually can't even perceive the upper ones of the layered, fey-glamour-clad echelons of the courts and in order to gain an audience with the queen of the fey, they'll have to first rise in status. From lowly goblin servants, lantern dragonettes and fey rakes to the higher echelons of court, the PCs will require all their wits and capabilities to survive the perils of the dueling season and slowly work their way up through a court enamored with the theft of memories, illusions and deception. Courtly intrigue and harmless and not so harmless pranks abound even before the PCs become aware of the existence of the Demon Lord of Roaches as a fixture in the court, of the various deadly factions (which include a celestial and old weaving crones that are more than they seem) or of the alluring courtesans and courtiers that can play a pivotal role in the rising through the ranks of the courts - if the PCs can manage to win (and keep) their favor. And yes, the affections of the shadow fey may very well turn out to be something rather problem-laden, as some of the numerous NPCs, both mortal and immortal that frequent the courts can attest to.

Even before the Black Prince's favorite quickling swordmaster challenges the PCs, even before the factions start actively recruiting PCs, we actually get a codified, complex and thoroughly rewarding rules-framework for the depiction of rising through the ranks of a court, a system, which when reskinned towards mortal courts, could be used for Song of Ice and Fire-like machinations. And I have only scarcely touched upon what there is to come - what about e.g. a hunting trip with the hostile and antagonistic Black Prince and a chase for the immortal firebird, represented via a cool, mapped mini-game? The very best banquet-scene I've ever seen in an adventure - easy to run, complex and thoroughly weird? A roach-like, loyal warrior who just wants to find a nice place to lay eggs - which have to unfortunately hatch from a body? The lists upon lists of events, intrigues etc.? The glorious maps?

What about the fact that the finale, after the PCs may finally get their audience with the Queen, requires them to find the insane Moonlight King in a maze of light-hazards and unique dangers and either kill him (in a fight that challenges brains and brawns) or convince him to abstain from the claim to Zobeck? Have I mentioned the potential to transcend the bounds of mor(t)ality in the aftermath of this module?

Conclusion:

Editing and formatting are the one weakness of this module - while not bad by any measure, I did notice a couple of editing glitches that could have been caught and here and there a small conversion relic in places where their presence is not crucial in any way. Layout adheres to a beautiful 2-column b/w-standard and the provided handouts and maps should water the mouths of any aficionado. The artworks are original b/w-pieces that fit thematically well within the context of the book, creating a seamless, unified impression. The pdf is extensively bookmarked for your convenience, though I'd still recommend getting dead-tree for this one.

Wolfgang Baur and Ben McFarland are immensely talented designers and authors - that's no secret. But even as a fan of many of Wolfgang's pieces, I can't recall any one that blew me away like this one did. Not one. This is the 123 page refutation of the claim that social interaction in Pathfinder is boring, the triumphant sneer in the face of all who claimed that d20-based systems with their combat-focus don't lend themselves to social interaction, court intrigue or any scenario, really, that requires subtlety. "Courts of the Shadow Fey" is a legend, one I slowly digested over multiple months, because every single page herein had some idea, some spark that made me cackle with glee, a pervading sense of jamais-vu suffusingthe pages - more of it than in the whole catalogs of some companies. I have no doubt that this module will become one of the must-have-played pieces of Pathfinder with its complex sandboxy structure, its attention to details. Its inventiveness and its elegant, at times beautiful, at times creepy blending of themes serve to more perfectly evoke what being "fey" is all about, it redefines evil in the context of fey as a form of elitism that may very well be justified.

Even if I tried, I could have never conveyed the sheer scope and awesomeness of this module, cover all the ideas herein, short of copying about 90% of the module. This is the gold-standard of what an ambitious module should be like and while perhaps not recommended for novice DMs, this is incredibly good - almost painfully so. And much like its unconventional ending that resounds so well with the theme of returning from the lands of the fey, turning the last page of this book left me with a sense of loss that it had ended, that there were not another 100 pages of shadow fey waiting for me. If I could, I'd rate this 6 stars. I got this book this year, so it will feature on my top 10 of 2013-list. It's one of my favorite Open Design/Kobold Press-books released. It's one of the best adventure-resources out there, either as module or setting and in scope, quality and detail on par with one of my all-time favorites, Coliseum Morpheuon. I'll repeat it again: GET THIS. Even if you run Golarion, not Midgard. Want a break from Kingmaker? Get this. Run another setting? Get this. Don't have a group and want a good read that is inspiring? Get this. Need ideas for fey tricks, hazards etc.? Get this. This is my unanimous recommendation towards anyone who even remotely is interested in the topic of fey: WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? GET THIS! Final verdict? 5 stars +seal of approval - this might be the best thing Wolfgang Baur has written so far - I know I consider it the best one, and Ben McFarland has gone above and beyond to make this module work in PFRPG. When do we get the courtly intrigue handbook for mortal courts?

If you read this book you'll have enough to get on your way as an artist not necessarily as a music entrepreneur. Thought the book is week on the independent label start up side, this is a must read wont feel cheated! Kashif presents the infromation in a clear and concise manner, its almost as if you were engaged in conversation with him. It takes you through every step of record contracts, royalties, publishing, production deals, management, and accounting. I find myself reffering to it time and time again!

This is a great book. I first purchased Donald Passmans book "Everything You Need To Know About The Music Buiness' - a must have book for anyone interested in this subject, but as a complete newbie, also a bit overwhelming. This is a book for Weber scholar; not for the normal reader. The reader will get the benefit if he/she is already familiar with old interpretations of Weber 's works such as Parsons' and Bendix. The author tries to show the subject of irrationality in Weber 's works which is contrary to other scholar's such as Wolfgang Schluster who emphasizes Rationality or Modernity as the main theme of Weber's. However if you are familiar with Sam Whimster's works. You can accept Sica's work easily. I buy this book because Sica writes other book which is Max Weber' a comprehensive bibliography. So I expect something new from his first Max Weber book. I also has his recent book about Weber. But I found nothing so exciting about this book.
